  • Castillo del Morro

Santiago de Cuba Things to Do

Spanish fortress, south of the city was built in 1633 , designed by same author of Morro in Havana. It has long and disturbing history. Place is nice but crowded with touristic scams who want to sell you cigars etc. Very strange is that you won't see any ships in front of fortress or even birds (don't know why). Scenery is spectacular (sea and...

Santiago de Cuba Things to Do

When you approach to this site from Palma Soriano, you'll be amazed of its beauty in middle of rich landscape. Pope was there, you should too if you're around Santiago. Popular Cuban sport stars left their medals there as a sign of gratitude. Indoor is beautiful too. Patron saint of Cuba and only basilica in Cuba.

  • Parque Cespedes

Santiago de Cuba Things to Do

The park square is surrounded by the Town Hall, the Catedral de la Asuncion, and the Hotel Casa Granda. The rooftop patio of the hotel offers beautiful views of the surroundings, as well as a bar. The streets leading away from the park house many shops, restaurants, etc. to explore. In the park itself there are benches to rest on and there will...

Take your time to explore the city and walk around. We met a local guy, Ernesto and old man who enjoys walking with tourists. He showed us some great places. If you want to know more you can read about it in my travelogue: Walking with Ernesto through Santiago.

The very center of the city is here in Plaza Céspedes, where is the cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción. In front of the church is the Parque Céspedes a nice square with gardens where it's easy to meet new people. It is also the best place to start a tour of the city.

Santiago de Cuba Things to Do

From the top of the "Gran Piedra" they say you can see Haiti and Jamaica on a clear day. Our trip up mountain wasn't on a clear day, but it was a beautiful view inbetween clouds. You can drive up most of the way, then there is a challenging staircase to the very top....but worth the climb...4048 feet. There is a restaurant there and a few wood...

  • Cuartel Moncada

Santiago de Cuba Things to Do

The famous building of Cuartel Moncada. Here, the 26 of July 1953 a small army leaded by Fidel Castro tried an assault that failed, but became the first real act of the cuban revolution. On the walls are still visible the holes made by the shots.

  • Walking Picos Turquinos

Walking Picos Turquinos In June 2010 I and my girlfriend ,a couple from Israel, spent three weeks in Cuba . As we enjoy walking in mountains and since Cuba does not have a lot Turquinos was an obvious choice. I found one personal experience online from May 2009. A pair of people who went south to north but most important they gave a name and email...
