About fifteen kms west of Remedios is a road that heads northerly to follow the coast line. After about another 15 kms, turn right to El Santo, the unexpected town that exists because of an old broken down sugar factory that they try to keep running. You will have travelled through miles of sugar cane to get there, and will be shocked at the lively place it is, in the middle of nowhere.
To feel less conspicuous, pick up a hitch-hiker, who will be very appreciative of the offer, and who will guide you through town. Travelling past the sugar factory and still heading north, you will eventually reach Playa Nazabal, a Cuban summer spot and a fishing village. In October it was as dead as a doorknocker, but still a find if you like to bumble in weird places.
You will probably notice an armed guard in a tower, overlooking the ocean. When I inquired as to who they would expect to land here, I discovered the soldier is watching for Cubans thinking of leaving.
