  • On the whole the food in Cuba isn't that great, but take the trouble to hunt out a paladar. These are privately run restaurants in family homes and the food is better (and often cheaper) than in the state-run places.

We went to a great one in Cienfuegos, recommended by other guests in our hotel (word of mouth is the best way to find these). There was no printed menu but lots of choice - you just need to concentrate while the waiter runs through the options!

La Bodeguita del Medio: Best "Mojito" and Black Beans and Rice in Havana!

  • First of all, this is not the easiest restaurant to find - but it's well worth the search. It's not that we were indiscriminant because we were starving after two weeks of searching for food (although the latter is the case) - it's that the food really IS delicious here. A bonus is the fact that it's pretty inexpensive.

The interior is extremely casual - some might refer to it as a "dive" - but it's rich in history. Former patrons include Chile's Salvador Allende - even Cuba's own Castro - and you'll find all kind of interesting celebrity autographs (and customer graffiti) covering the dark, wood paneled walls.

The staff is friendly and nobody hurries you to eat and leave....it's a very relaxed atmosphere.

This remains one of only TWO positive eating experiences during our entire two weeks in Cuba (not counting the 2 days in between when, in desperation, we broke our pact and admitted ourselves into one of those evil, all-inclusive tourist resorts where we were shocked to find real food there...we regained our strength after 2 days and set back out on the road again....I'm embarassed to admit this part)

Do NOT miss the famous rum drink (Hemingway's favorite!!) "el mojito". The peppermint leaves are strong - as is the cane sugar - so go easy on this one. I've had "mojitos" everywhere and this place served them up the best!

I'm a vegetarian so I had the black beans and rice - I'm a pretty good expert on this dish - and it was fantastic here. Not dry, and just enough spice to keep things interesting.

Cuba a not a gourmet country. The food is simple and based on chicken, pork, beef and fish, prepared in a simple manner mostly served with rice, black beans, cucumber and tomatoes.

In state restaurants they often serve food which was frozen before and therefore isn't fresh. Often the meals are more expensive than in Europe but unfortunately the quality is lower.

The best food can be found in paladores (= private family owned restaurants controlled by the state) and casas particulares (= bed & breakfast). They have a limited choice but the ingredients are always fresh.

Lobster and shrimps. However, only state restaurants and hotels are allowed to serve it.

I went with a friend to this very nice restaurant. It is renovated, clean and modern decor. It was Christmas time and had a lovely Christmas tree set up. The washroom was modern and clean, as was the medium size restaurant.

The food was very good, and plenty of it. I had a dish of large shrimps (Camaron enchilado) $4.50 CUC (convertible pesos) , white rice, vegetables, small salad, my friend had filete de pescado grile (grilled whitefish). . We each had a beer, can't recall the price, and Cop Suey especial (delicious)
Helado pina glace $1.50, ice cream.

    I highly recommend the restaurant.
Service was good. Restaurant can get crowded, as many Cubans eat there, because of the low prices and large portions of dishes.

    Open noon to midnight.

Chop suey and shrimps were fantastic.

I ate here a couple of times, and really enjoyed the tortillas with bananas. The air conditioning wasn't working and it only has 3 or 4 tables, so be prepared to be "cooking" at times, but still a nice little place and very good food. Across the street from Havana Libre Hotel.

My casa particular was just up from this restaurant, luckily.

Tortillas con bananas. First of all, for tortilla lovers, it is like an omelette, (eggs), not like Mexican flat bread, much to my surprise.

Very tasty, and of course rice and beans, arroz congris always. I love Cuban cooking and can easily live on rice, beans and yucca forever. Bad photo but you get the idea, it is a small place.

    Restaurant “El Palenque”
"El Palenque", located near PABEXPO exhibition place, is one of the restaurants where good treatment is combined with services and dishes of high international cuisine. In a familiar environment, you may try the most exquisite and favourite dishes reasonably priced.

    Cuisine Type: Cuban.

I love roast pig and there was lots of it here, so I had some pork rinds and meat, delicioso, rice and beans, ensalda, cerveza (of course) and helado (delicious ice cream).

The setting here was like a bunch of bohios (palm leaf thatched roofs) and tables in the shade or sun (I preferred the sunshine).

It is very popular place with lunchtime crowd, business people or tourists. Mostly locals eat here, price is cheap and selection is great.

There are booths with different selections of food and you can pick anything from the menu and it is brought to your table.

I highly recommend this eatery, setting is great and so is the food.

The table is filled with lot's of different dishes and it's impossible to eat all what you receive on your table. It's a paradise for some one who likes very good food.

A paladar is a family owned restaurant, it’s dining at the house of the Cubans. Some are official restaurants, some of theme are not so official, but one thing they have all in common: the food is very good and you get more then you can eat. Here you see the dish we got in l’Estrella in Trinidad and then I have to tell you that there were two small tables next to this mean table to hold all the food. Delicious and so much that we were full and couldn’t finish our dessert anymore. Try it and you will eat no where else anymore..

    Everything that’s fresh and delicious.

None: In search of a good Cuban sandwich

  • The great Cuban sandwich is a famous treat in Miami. The fresh Cuba bread and stuffings came with the Cuban immigrants, so I thought I would enjoy an authentic sandwich in Cuba. On the first day, I found a bakery in Santiago, but the long lines and limited times for sale of bread caused me to miss my chance. It was not until Havana that I spotted another opportunity. At a certain time lines started to form on a bunch of streets in Havana. Acting like a native I joined a line and learned that sandwiches had arrived. The price was small, but the disappointment great. I could excuse the febile processed meat, cheese and mustard, but not the stale bread.

All I know is that I never saw anything like the famous Cuban sandwich. The Cuba libres, mojitos, and dacquiri's were outstanding, but the street food was a disappointment. The hotel food was international without inspiration.
