Cuban Restaurants: Cuban Restaurants

by Natalllya

Throughout Cuba, you will find these small private "home" restaurants. Basically they are 1-3 table small restaurants that are more or less ran out of the bottom floor of a person's home. The prices are reasonable and you get to taste real Cuban cooking. These are legal and government run.

Paladares

by toonsarah

On the whole the food in Cuba isn't that great, but take the trouble to hunt out a paladar. These are privately run restaurants in family homes and the food is better (and often cheaper) than in the state-run places. We went to a great one in Cienfuegos, recommended by other guests in our hotel (word of mouth is the best way to find these). There was no printed menu but lots of choice - you just need to concentrate while the waiter runs through the options!

Pelotero: The less expensive option

by zacaman

For anyone who wants to live less like a tourist, and save a few bucks at the same time, Cuba can easily be experienced from within the peso economy (moneda nacional, not the CUC, or Cuban Convertable Pesos). Just drop into any Cadeca (money changing shops - look for the white sign with "Cadeca $" on them) like the one at 23 and 10; 23 and M; Obispo St; many, many others. Hand over 5 CUC and get back a wad of 20-pesos moneda nacional bills. Then pop over to 23 and 12 in Vedado. This is a corner of historic importance - it's where Fidel Castro declared the socialist nature of the Cuban Revolution, among other things. Also in this area is the ICAIC (Cuban Film Institute), the "Fresa y Chocolate" café (and accompanying ICAIC video and movie poster store), a pizza place - the Cinecitta - which always has huge lineups to get in (but around the right side on 12 you'll find a take-out window...

La Guarida: Best Restaurant in Cuba?

by AnjaV

Yep, maybe a cliché but true ... La Guarida is the best restaurant in Cuba AND the most expensive AND the most famousIt is famous because the restaurant was the decor of the movie La Fresa y Chocolate (Strawberry and Chocolate)Many celeberties had dinner here, like the Royal Spanish Family ... to give you an example

el torre: roof top dining with windows open

by tomcarlson

so, this restaurant's on the top of the Y-shaped apartment building in vedado, along the malecon. this is the same building that khrushchev saw during his visit to cuba in the early 1960's and decided to build 5 of (because of its all-in-one design). that aside, the restaurant basically serves glorified cafeteria food. it does have a nice view of havana, complete with open windows for a bit of breeze, but i'd recommend just having a coctail and then eating somewhere cheaper. the drinks.

el divulio: simple, tasty pizzas in miramar

by tomcarlson

out by all the bizarro embassies in the near-suburb of miramar is this great little paladar. they, apparently, own the only clay oven in cuba, which quickly churns out simple, sabroso pizzas. the margarita pizza was wonderful.

la guarida: the best meal in havana

by tomcarlson

perhaps the most well-known "paladar" in havana (a "paladar" being a state-approved restaurant in one's home), la guarida serves delicious and sophisticated food in the charming setting of an old mansion. my dinner companion remarked, "it's like finding some incredible little place in manhattan that no one's yet heard of, but soon will." though paladars are supposed to have only 12 seats, this place has somehow (bribed the right people, perhaps?) managed to get around that limitation, seating something like 60 at a time. increased capacity aside, however, you should still call in advance to get a table, as it's terribly popular. i hesitantly ordered the chicken curry, and it turned out to be absolutely fantastic. the tuna on sugar cane skewers is delightful, as well.

Casa Particular Food

by skatzcatz

The best food and option while in Cuba is to take meals with the Casa Particular your staying with. It's also an oportunity to get to know the locals.Average Prices Beef/Chicken Dishes - 8 PesoBreakfast - 3 PesoDrinks(water, beer) - 1 peso

La Roca: Meal + Ice Cream + Beer = 3 CUC

by robramon

This is my favourite restaurant in the whole of la Habana, kind of a mix of local and tourist clientele, it is simply the best value you will find anywhere. You pay 3-3.50 CUC for a pretty decent sized meal, ice cream and they even throw a beer in, and it doesnt look like a cheap place and compares well with any restaurant you can find in London (apart from the cuban waiting times of course,lol)- There is even a piano player (usually in the evenings) which is great. There is also a cocktail bar opposite the restaurant area, which is perfect for after meal drinks, usually the bar plays spanish/american pop and reggaeton music. La Roca is located in Vedado, not far from the Habana Libre hotel, on 21 y M, any taxi driver or local will know la roca ;) The menu is pretty much as you will find in most cuban restaurants, and is thus, limited to fish, pork, beef or sometimes horse ;), with rice...

Local food

by Helga67

Cuba a not a gourmet country. The food is simple and based on chicken, pork, beef and fish, prepared in a simple manner mostly served with rice, black beans, cucumber and tomatoes. In state restaurants they often serve food which was frozen before and therefore isn't fresh. Often the meals are more expensive than in Europe but unfortunately the quality is lower. The best food can be found in paladores (= private family owned restaurants controlled by the state) and casas particulares (= bed & breakfast). They have a limited choice but the ingredients are always fresh. Lobster and shrimps. However, only state restaurants and hotels are allowed to serve it.
