Eat in a private home

by rachel_sun

More Info: You can also eat in private homes for payment in dollas and this is quite legal. The food is usually better than in most restuarants and costs alot less.Ask the price of your meal before you sit down. Most large resorts have places to eat and drink.

The national drink is Rum

by rachel_sun

Favorite Menu Item: The national drink is rum, produced from the cane juice, the leftovers from sugar cane which is grown on the island.Cuban cocktails are gorgous and Hemingway drank Mojitos, which is sugar, lime juice, ice, fresh mint, rum and soda water.Hatuey beer is very nice.I loved the fresh fruit juices as well, guarapo is pure sugar cane juice pressed infront of you, yummy.

The food in Cuba is quite plain

by rachel_sun

The food in Cuba is quite plain,it is a mix of african and spanish. If you are based at a resort, you will probaly eat there,in your hotel.Breakfast is the main meal of the day, which consists of fresh fruit, fruit juices, cheeses and meats. Most restaurants serve a Creole Cuban cuisine. It is mainly rice and beans and chicken.Fish is normally simply grilled and you can get lobster at a price.Popular side dishes include root vegetables(yucca, and maduros or tostones, which is fried plantains)Do try the delicious icecream called Coppelia, made all over the country.

Havana's China town

by K1W1

The Chinatown in Havana is often laughed at by the locals as there don't appear to be any Chinese there. The food though is very Chinese and as well as being tasty, it is also very economical. The atmosphere of this alley is great and as there are several restaurants open 24 hours, you can eat here, either in the air conditioned rooms or outside at any time of the day or night. I tried several dishes here on different occasions and don' t have a favourite. An example of the costs though is A chop suey (fish, chicken, beef or vege) is just USD 1.50. It's hard to beat these costs in any restaurant in Cuba

Hole in the wall: Don't miss the holes in the wall.

by K1W1

The hole in the wall is where the locals often buy their food. It is usually basic but if you want the Cuban experience, these can't be missed. You will also find that you will normally have to queue and that you can use the local currency in these places. They are cheap. There are many pizza places around - just look for the signs and the queues. They are tasty and fill the gap for around 5 pesos. (USD 1.00 = 27 pesos)

La Guarida: Say hello to Enrique!

by Pixiego

This resturant is amazing, it is on the second floor of an old building that is all apartments now. Enrique's family owned his floor and he turned it into a resturant, so it is a private resturant not government run. The prices are alittle high for Cuban standards but well worth it. The pork dish is good.

private restaurant (paladar)

by sunnywong

Since 1995 Cubans can run a private restaurant called paladar. Many have no sign outside and some are illegal because they have no permit. Most of the time there is no menu and prices are not fixed. You can sometimes get lobster, although this is illegal since lobster is preserved for the hotels. Expect to pay between 6 and 8 US$.

by jenniferhen

We ate at a Cubans home and they made us the BEST lobster that I have ever had! I do not honestly believe that I will ever taste lobster as good as that ever again! It was authentic, it was relaxed, and it gave me the chance to spend some quality time off of the resort and with some fabulous people. The lobster of course!!!

by good-old

Private families can get some extra money to their ordinary houshold budget's by inviting tourists for dinner. John and me did that one day we got away from the students and I have never tasted better Lobster. If you get the chance to try this, DO IT.
