 | Cuba Things To Do | Tips 1 - 10 of 467 | |
One of the must things to do in my opinion, is to make a day trip to Havana which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We booked our HAVANA HISTORY DAY TOUR through our Nolitours representative (in Varadero) at the cost of 67 CUC (Cuban Convertible Pesos) - about $70.00 CDN. The bus picked us up at 8:00 a.m. and after picking up some more people at other resorts, we were on our way to Havana, which is 83 miles or 134 km away. We drove through the town of Varadero and then on to Matanzas and finally - Havana, arriving around 11:00 a.m. We did a walking tour to Cathedral Square, to see the wonderful Cathedral and to look inside. We then went down a side street to Hemingway's favourite bar - Bodeguita Del Medio" where he had his usual Mojito. Then it was time for lunch at a typical Cuban restaurant which was called "El Patio". There we had a lunch with a choice of chicken, pork or fish. I had the chicken which came with a cole slaw and rice. You also could have a drink and coffee with dessert. After lunch we had free time until 2:00 p.m. After getting back on to the bus, we headed for "Revolution Square" and then to the Christopher Columbus necropolis (cemetery). We were then taken to a cigar store "Romeo Y Julieta" where some people bought cigars and bottles of rum. A cigar factory tour was not part of the tour. The last stop was near Central Park where some very beautiful Havana buildings were located such as the Capitolio which very much resembled the Washington DC Capital building. About 4:00 p.m. we all boarded the bus for the trip back to Varadero. Overall a very nice tour and very well worth going. Leave a Comment Address: Havana

Vinales valley has the most beautiful scenery that I saw in Cuba. It lies in West Cuba, only 3 hours drive from Havana. The valley is characterised by green fields of tobacco and other crops, red earth and impressive round-topped hills, which are called "mogotes". These limestone hills are covered with rich and varied vegetation, and some hills have caves and underground rivers that you can visit. Plaza Mayor from the roof of the Camara Oscura by toonsarah In one corner of the Plaza Vieja in the old town of Havana is the Camara Oscura. You take a lift up to the roof for great views of the square below and the rooftops of the old town beyond. Then into a darkened room where a guide will operate the camara and show you the same view enlarged and projected onto a giant dish. It's incredibly detailed and in real time, so you can watch people going about their daily business totally unaware of the "spies" from above. You'll be amazed at how fascinated you can become with somebody's washing hung out to dry or a man walking a dog! Address: Plaza Vieja (north east corner)

Trinidad, with its cobblestone streets, lovely pastel-coloured 18th and 19th century houses, palaces, and plazas, was my favourite city in Cuba. Trinidad is a quiet, peaceful little city where you will find more horse-drawn carts than automobile traffic, where you can enjoy a night of salsa at the Casa de la Musica or drink the local cocktail "La Canchanchara". A place to cherish for ever. Leave a Comment Directions: In Central Cuba at the south coast. South of Santa Clara and East of Cienfuegos.

Cienfuegos was founded by French colonists from Louisiana in 1819. It is this French influence, which is still notable in the architecture and streets, that makes the city a nice place to visit. Especially Parque Marti with its many beautiful buildings, Paseo del Prado, a broad boulevard and Punta Gorda with its Palacio del Valle are worthwile visiting. Tinajone by alza There's a mix of everything in this district of Havana, and something for everyone. I stayed in Centro Havana. I got used to its derelict buildings and broken pavements, streets teaming with life, not many tourists. Later, I went to Vedado and thought it was so much nicer, greener, wide avenues, big houses in the residential sector, great ice-cream at Coppelia's, CD stores, restaurants and bars, and of course, the Malecon and La Rampa, lots of nightlife there! But I was hooked on Centro... and every time I returned to the Vedado, I felt far and sort of lonely. In Centro, you walk the narrow streets and see friendly Cubans playing domino, who invite you to watch the championship game with them. I liked that. The pic shows a tinajone in front of a house in Vedado. Tinajones are huge jars originally made by Catalan potters in the 16th century, to keep rain water, and food products. They come from Camagüey (well, I mean, that's where they started.) Leave a Comment

Museo Romantico by toonsarah When in Trinidad make sure you visit the Museo Romantico - even if you're not usually keen on museums, this one's worth it for the lovely views of the Plaza Mayor. There are just a few rooms with furniture, ornaments and decoration as it would have been in the mid nineteenth century. The lady who showed us round sold us some beautiful crochet work - strictly illegal, but none of the locals could live without the black market economy. Our guidebook said no photos allowed but we found out that for a small fee it's not a problem. Address: Plaza Mayor, Trinidad

'La Habana' is the capital of Cuba. It's a lively city with a harbour guarded by a fortress, an old part "Habana Vieja" where you will find the most beautiful spanish colonial buildings and narrow cobblestone streets, "Habana Centro" where you will find some great museums and the Capitolio, a copy of the Capitol in Washington, and "Vedado" the modern political and cultural part where you will find the square of the revolution. And whereever you go, the music is present. Leave a Comment Directions: North coast of the island

Cigar making in Trinidad by toonsarah Make sure you visit a cigar factory while in Cuba. There's one in Havana (behind the Capitolio near Parque Central) and lots of tours in the Vinales region, but you won't be allowed to take photos. We found a little one-man operation in Trinidad where for a small tip we could take as many pictures as we wanted. Address: corner of Antonio Maceo and Colon
