Havana: Cathedral

by toonsarah

You will see this cathedral referred to as both the Catedral de la Virgen María de la Concepción Inmaculada (Cathedral of the Virgin Mary of the Immaculate Conception) and the Catedral de San Cristóbal (Cathedral of Saint Christopher); both are correct, as the cathedral is dedicated to both saints. It was built between 1748 and 1477, and between 1796 and 1898 held the remains of Christopher Columbus (now in Seville Cathedral). It is unusual for a baroque cathedral in having an asymmetrical façade – look carefully and you will see that the left-hand tower is narrower than that on the right. The larger right-hand tower contains the bells, which regularly chime the hour and are said to have been cast with gold and silver mixed into the bronze, giving them their sweet tone.Inside there are copies of paintings by Rubens and Murillo on the altars and frescoes bythe Italian artist Giuseppe...

Havana: Habana Vieja

by toonsarah

If you like people watching and enjoy photography you can spend many a happy hour walking the streets of Havanna’s Old Town, known as Habana Vieja in Spanish. The Old Town was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982). Here and there are large squares, typical of Spanish Colonial cities, and these are naturally a magnet for tourists, but take time too to explore the winding side streets. There may be no sights of especial notice, but it is in these that the human face of Havana shows itself.Music is everywhere – a radio blares from almost every open door or window and you can’t help but walk to its rhythm. Many of the buildings are in a poor state of repair and some seem on the verge of collapse, but they are all occupied. It struck us that despite the obvious poverty here, the people are very ready with a smile and a greeting as you pass. Other buildings have been renovated,...

Short stay trip

by RKyle

Are you renting your car in Varadero?Day 1: You might want to go to Vinales first. I have stayed in three casas there and the best is "Villa Benito" for beds, rooms and the best "mojitos" in Cuba!! Ph. 793293 or 0152446361.Day 2: Then head for Santa Clara and Remedios which is near and old like Trinidad. I am guessing a 5 hour drive.Day 3& 4: The road from Santa Clara to Trinidad is good and the scenery and sights around Trinidad are great. I would stay in a casa in La Boca 4 kms out on the beach.Rancho Luna is on the way to Cienfugoes ( a very clean city) and you can head out from there to Havana and back to Caimito. Day 5 & 6: Havana and Caimito a 2 or 3 hour drive from Cienfugoes. Two days will only give you a sniff of Havana.Varadero is a two hour trip From Havana by bus so if you are driving a bit shorter time.I can give you casas in these areas if you want or check my home page for...

Vedado

by Malecka

I really like the whole district, despite the lack of time to explore it more. The very first night in Havana I actually went to the famous bar El Gato Tuerto (really cool bar, though you pay 5 CUC as entrance). There's often live music, different performances organized. Great atmosphere.Other places to see in Vedado: Casa de las Americas and also the famous ice-cream Coppelia.Hotel Habana Libre and Hotel Nacional de Cuba, two of the biggest hotels in the city, are both located in Vedado.

Centro Habana

by Malecka

the very core of the city, if you ask me. there's different music coming out of every single corner... people sitting in front of the old (ooooold) buildings, chatting... I love their accent, the unmistakable acento cubano :-) And the diversity of faces, of... skin tones, skin colours, facial features... Absolutely lovely!I also visited a green market in Centro Habana, one of the many. Definitely a good idea to visit one and also, it gives you a chance to "spend" some moneda nacional (I've explained the money issue in a "general" tip).

Habana Vieja vol. 2

by Malecka

I mentioned old Havana's classic cathedral San Cristobal (worth a visit) and plaza de Armas, also a nice place. Now, from Plaza de Armas, you could explore Mercaderes street, reach Plaza Vieja and then take Brasil (Teniente Rey) street straight to the Capitolio Nacional. Enormous building, easy to recognize it by its dome. Part of the Capitolio Nacional complex today is the National Museum of Natural History. It's an interesting site and definitely a landmark of Havana.

El Malecon

by Malecka

A walk... Sorry, a LONG walk along the Malecon... at any time of the day. I absolutely loved it. The salty air, the clear skies, the blue sea and Havana's skyline... And of course, a lot of people, the colorful mixture of Cubans that impressed me over and over again. The Malecon begins in Habana Vieja but it is huge so you could easily pass three hours walking towards the Vedado district.

Museo de la Revolución

by Malecka

Okay, so I found it very, very, very interesting. It ... describes the path of the Cuban revolution downright to the tiniest detail.:-) I thought it was something worth seeing. It is located in Habana Vieja, on Refugio st., close to Avenida de las Misiones.I don't remember how much I paid for entrance (it wasn't a lot), but I did have to pay extra (I think 5 CUC) to be able to carry my camera with me and take pictures. :-)

La Habana vieja

by Malecka

I'm sure there are more than enough tips on this part of the city, but ... it's because it is truly enchanting. The very first day in Havana I took a stroll down Obispo street (it's amazing how lively that street is, the energy that flows along with it is... fantastic) to the Hotel Parque Central. There's a small park there so I sat down and did some people watching. Then, I continued along Paseo de Martí - bears some resemblance to the Rambla in Barcelona ... at least it did to me. Take a look at the buildings as you start walking towards the sea. When you reach the end of Paseo de Martí, you actually get to very beginning of the Malecón, on your left side. I continued to my right, and started walking along the Avenida del Puerto. I got to the Plaza de la Catedral (the Cathedral is a nice sight and the square (la plaza) is very charming. There's also a nice little bar/restaurant where...

Where are you starting from?Last year we took the morning Havana bus to Playa Larga but this year it was discontinued so we got off at Jagury Grande at the rest stop and a fellow found a private car who took us to Playa Larga for $10 cuc.(bargain). Out of Playa Larga we had a choice of going back to Jagury Grande or a private car to Cienfuegos for $60cuc (what a adventure a 1954 in great shape). Your best bet for Trinidad would be back to Jagury Grande and take Viazul from the rest stop. Make note of the time you first arrive so that you can catch the same bus. It goes thru Cienfuegus which is a great stop! For tours go to one of the hotels in Playa Larga or Infotourist offices such as Artex and they will help you out. You can visit Topes de Collantes out of both Cienfuegos or Trinidad. Yes you can arrange it there. We stay at legal casas where ever we go except Playa Larga where a family...
