Casas

by RKyle

I travel by bus from Havana to Cienfuegos and stay in a Casa near the bus station and a easy walk to downtown and the malecon. I like shopping in the plaza and walking the malecon, music and dancing outdoors at Club Cienfuegos with a great view of the harbour. Beach time is at Playa Rancho Luna.I take the bus to Trinidad and have a lobster dinner at my favourite casa, head downtown for the music in the plaza and a local club that has a small but entertaining show of local dancers(sorry didn't get it's name)hire a taxi and go to the Valle de los Ingenios viewpoint and on to the Torre Manaca Iznaga (Slave tower)plus the pottery shop.Go to my homepage for good casa contacts in these two cities.

Visit the country side see the real locals

by midnightflyers

When I was in Cuba I done a 2 centre trip Beach & city trip.Went on a jeep Safari where you have the option to drive the jeep yourself in a convoy, or if you don't want to drive they will drive the jeep & you are the passenger. In Holguin they took us out to the country side (forgot the roads are an exprience in themselves) We were taken to a local town and you will see there is a ration shop, a doctors, cigar factory, church, school. then we were taken to a local farm. As much as the people are poor they are all educated to a very high standard. There education is to such a high standard that they trade with other countries sending there doctors over in exchange for goods?

Birdwatching

by FMJ666

This trip was mostly centred around sitting on the beech in the tourist trap of Varadero with a limited amount of birding involved. The birding involved around a single mid-morning (09:00 - 12:00) trip to the Zapata peninsula with Orestes Martinez El Chino and few stops along the side of the road when appropriate. Birds around the Varadero area are quite limited, with only common species present: Greater Antillean Grackle, Northen Mockingbird, Magnificent Frigatebird, Royal Tern, Caspian Tern, Laughing Gull, Common Ground-Dove, Mourning Dove, Zenaida Dove, House Sparrow, Cuban Emerald, Double-crested Cormorant and Grey Kingbird.Withing the Varadero complex of resorts is a small nature trail encmopassing some mangrove and ´sand forest´. Only a few miles at best and swamped with kamikaze mosquitos, it is worth a walk around at least once. A slow pace is necessary as the area holds some...

visit the historical city of santa clara

by hanspeter_W.

Santa Clara is the capital city of the Cuban province of Villa Clara. It is located in the most central region of the province and almost in the most central region of the countryPresently, there are two well- known figures associated with Santa Clara: Marta Abreu de Estevez, a beloved native daughter known as "the Benefactress of the City" and Ernesto Che Guevara, where he is buried, for having waged there the final battle of the revolution that toppled the Fulgencio Batista government in 1958

visit topas de collantes mountains

by hanspeter_W.

Topes de Collantes is a nature reserve park in the Escambray Mountains range in Cuba. It also refers to the third highest peak in the reserve, where a small settlement and tourist center is located, all sharing the same nameTopes de Collantes, literally Collantes’ Highs, almost 800 meters (2,625 ft) above sea level, along with Potrerillo peak, 931 meters (3,054 ft) and tallest San Juan peak, 1,140 meters (3,740 ft) are located in the Escambray range. These mountains are shared by the three central provinces of the island; Villa Clara Province to the north, Cienfuegos Province and Sancti Spiritus Province to the east and west respectively. The wet winds coming off the Caribbean Sea have made the north face of the mountains a luxurious refugee for plants and animals, while the drier south face hosts important ecosystems, in which it lie two famous UNESCO World Heritage sites; Valle de los...

trinidad villa de la santisima

by hanspeter_W.

Trinidad is a town in the province of Sancti Spíritus, central Cuba. Together with the nearby Valle de los Ingenios, it has been one of UNESCOs World Heritage sites since 1988Tourism officials like to say Trinidad is a museum in itself. Those visiting the 500-year-old city will find Spanish colonial architecture, underscoring a colonial ambiance that marks the tiny city one of the country’s greatest attractions. Only a few square blocks in size, historic Trinidad is famous for its lovely, cobblestone streets, pastel coloured houses with elaborate wrought-iron grills, as well as majestic palaces and plazas. The city can be toured in a few hours, by foot or by horse-drawn carriage. The city’s is located near both the Escambray Mountains and the Caribbean beach. One of the area’s most interesting sights is the Valley of the Sugar Mills, which has been declared a World Heritage Site. The...

visit cienfuegos

by hanspeter_W.

Cienfuegos City is called "The Pearl of the South" because of the impressive beauty of its bay; because of its seductive city which provokes the wonder of all who know it, and because of that innate nobility which characterizes those born in Cienfuegos. The history of Cienfuegos possesses interesting antecedents and is rich in aborigine and Hispanic legends. Before the Spanish came to America, the zone was settled by indigenous people and was known as the Cacicazgo de Jagua. In order to protect its magnificent bay from corsairs and pirates, who ploughed the Caribbean, the third most important fort was erected in 1745. It was called the castle of Nuestra Señora de los Angeles de Jagua, situated right in the canyon of the entrance to the bay.The foundation of Cienfuegos occurred in 1819, when French colonists settled in it, calling it Fernandina de Jagua, in honor of King Ferdinand VII and...

Things to Do in Cuba

by risse73

You could do the following like we did: 1.) Havana sights/Old Havana [Malecon, the Fort, Plazas in La Habana Vieja, the touristy "La Bodeguita," shops in old town, nightlife (Tropicana & some clubs--I forgot the names), La Copelia--the ice cream shop, the various neighborhoods like Vedado, the university, shopping, etc.]2.) Varadero where you have a good combination of day/night life. 3.) Hiking in the Sierra Maestra4.) Farmers cooperative (e.g., sugar cane plantation) somewhere in Santiago de Cuba 5.) Visit other colonial towns all over Cuba 6.) Talk to locals about their everyday lives & their livelihood. Cubans are some of the most sincere and genuine people I've met. Good luck & enjoy your trip to Cuba!

Potential "things to do" in Cuba

by risse73

Varadero had a good combination of day/night life. It has white powdered beaches, but could be touristy. I found Cubans to excel in dancing and you will easily find dance partners there for a good, clean, and fun night out. Good luck!

Visitors to Cuba need advise

by cochinjew

Fairly straightforward. Stay at a casa particular in la Habana.. about 20 pounds per night. food about another 15 pounds (eating well, not the garbage street food). so more or less 25 pounds per person per night. nightclubs and danceclubs you will end up buying drinks for the cubans , beer and drinks are around one pound at the most each. lots of fun and partying, dont worry about that. you will have NO problem getting to know Cuba, they are the friendliest people in all of the Caribbean..I prefer a place like Cayo Levisa but it is farily quiet. Varadero is a wonderful beach and right now they have special offers.. for about 75 pounds you could have an all inclusive.. resort and all the food which is not bad for Varadero..you can book it through one of the tours on internet, please book it through cuban based tour companies.you can get to varadero by bus from la habana. You will have a...
