Varadero

by Helga67

What can I say about Varadero? Some love it and some just don't, like me.Varadero is a peninsula on the north coast, 120 km east of Havana. and a famous beach destination. The peninsula is one big resort, with one all-in hotel next to the other. It has beautiful white sandy beaches, and turquoise waters, but in comparison to other beaches in Cuba, they are crowded. It's a great place for young people wanting to party, sun-lovers, and families with children. After two weeks touring and experiencing the real Cuba, Varadero just doesn't feel like being in Cuba. We just stayed here because it was close to our airport of departure.

Sancti Spiritus

by Helga67

Sancti Spiritus is not only the name of a province in central Cuba, but also the name of its capital. The city doesn't get a lot of tourists. Most people go directly to Trinidad, which is more impressive. We arrived here in the afternoon and left the next morning. For us it was a nice stop-over. We had a little walk around the historical center of this colonial city, and enjoyed our stay at a great state hotel.I must admit that the city didn't look very attractive outside the center and because of the lack of tourists, people were more eager to earn some extra "tourist" money from the few that wandered their streets.

Santa Clara

by Helga67

Santa Clara is the capital of Villa Clara province in cental Cuba.We had a stop-over here on our way from Sancti Spiritus to Varadero. You can visit the Monumento a la Toma del Tren Blindado (Armored Train Monument) at Carretera Camajuani. It's a popular revolutionary landmark. It is located in a small park where you will find a reconstruction of how Che Guevara and his soldiers derailed the train with Batista's army which led to the revolution. There's a tiny museum telling the story with text (only in Spanish) and photos.(entrance fee: 1 CUC; photo: 1 CUC; video: 5 CUC).There is also a reconstruction

Santa Clara - Che Guevara

by Helga67

The biggest attraction in Santa Clara is the Monumento Ernesto Che Guevara at Plaza de la Revolucion. Here you will find a huge statue of Che Guevara, a revolutionary hero, overlooking the plaza. Underneath the statue is a museum with displays about Che's life and exploits. There is also a mausoleum with Guevara's remains and sixteen of his fellow combatants killed in 1967 during the Bolivia campaign. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9 am to 4 pm.Admission: 3 CUC; no cameras or video cameras are allowed inside.

DAY TRIP TO ***

by TheYoungs

The locals all come from here and it was an "experience" to see the real ***. lots of begging especially when we got straight off coach. However the police/escorts soon sorted that out. They can be arrested for descending upon tourists. Very little to do here but glad we went to see the other side of cuban life. Went to the sugarcane factory.

paragliding

by TheYoungs

Locals were always on the beach offering people the chance to do paragliding it cost around £15 each but was well worth it. You went up with an instructor so all you had to do was relax (and scream!). wicked

Highly Intellectual, Discourse as part of Life

by cochinjew

To me, the most interesting intellectual life of the Americas can be found in three cities: Buenos Aires in Argentina, Sao Paolo in Brasil and la Habana in Cuba.La Habana was a great reward in this respect but as a punishment I was given to transit often in Miami as well, one of the least intellectual cities of all the americas!Come to Cuba with someone intelligent as you are or more intelligent than you and it becomes a feast of ideas and discussions. If you are proficient in Spanish and have access to contacts, day after day your brain will be stimulated beyond belief. In two consecutive days, I was lucky to spend time with Ambrosio Fornet and Rogelio Martinez Fure, intellectuals' intellectuals, as Paz would have said...Cuba is a treasury of educated intelligent people well versed in the nature of the world and many of them are well travelled as well. Fore had visited more than fifty...

The Jewish Community of Cuba

by cochinjew

Once an important jewish community in the Caribbean, the jewish community of Cuba has suffered attrition by migration and political ideology and disinterest. Robert Levine of the University of Miami has written a good book on the history of the Jews of Cuba. Perhaps the first non Indian person to touch Cuban territory was a jew from Mallorca who spoke Arabic. Colon had the mistaken notion that the indigenous people may understand Arabic! The two major communities Ashkenazim called Polacos and the Sefardim called Turcos, mainly to denote their geographical origins, existed side by side. Three synangogues still function in La Habana: the orthodox Adath Israel in Habana Vieja and the Prominent Conservative synagogue Patronato in Vedado ( adela Zworin, Presidenta) and the sefardi synagogue not too far away.

Bus trip to ***~

by southmtn2000

The day trip to the mainland is worth it ( about $35CND ) but make sure you book on the day that the tour guide will be speaking your language. We went with a busload of Quebecers so most of the narration was in French. After seeing the town of ***~ there is a fun bout tour (race) through the mangroves which was followed by a very tasty fish lunch beside the lake.
