Bodeguita del Medio by Helga67 Especially in state restaurants and bars some employees like to gain some extra money by tricking you. E.g the total on the handwritten check is higher than the addition of the various items or there is only one number as total written on the bill. Always double check the bill and if necessary ask the waiter for the receipt of the registration machine, because there the waiters cannot cheat.
Always ask for the written menu card beforehand . If there is no card, ask about the prices before you order anything. Leave a Comment

School children in Trinidad by Helga67 Sometimes tourists will be asked to buy milk for infants of the family. This is a trick. The person will buy the milk in your presence and afterwards, when you are gone, he/she gives back the milk and gets your money. By the way: children up to seven years get milk for free in Cuba. School boys in Havana by Helga67 Every child in Cuba has to go to school and gets food there. There are no "street kids" like in other Latin American countries. But some kids ask tourists for little gifts or sweets or money. This way some earn more than adults with a proper job which causes social problems. Therefore don't give money or things to kids which can be resold. There is no need for children to beg. Leave a Comment

Happy Cuban children ... the normal way to be by Canguy I was sitting in a cafe having my coffee and cigarette when a man approached me and told me in flawless English that he wasn't begging for money; all he wanted was some milk for his 2 babies. He took me to a nearby grocery store and I bought him a bag of milk powder for US$12.00. Not a large amount, and I thought I was doing something nice. The following evening, siting on a park bench, a woman approached and told me the same "baby" story. Within the next 3o minutes, another woman told me the same story. Finally I caught on. There was no baby. I bought the milk...she returns it to the store for a full refund. What they got out of me was certainly more than if they had just asked me for a dollar. The moral ..... beware of Cuban babies !!!
Just be pleasant about the whole episode. Do not get upset ... that's the last thing you want to do.
Just politely say NO. If they hustle you, walk away....or holler. The policeman, who is everywhere, will certainly frighten the tricksters away. Leave a Comment

Malecon by YanetT Everyone has to go to the Malecon at least once. I found it to be different than the glamorous photos I always see on Cuba websites, but still a neat place. What struck me were the decaying buildings, but they are being restored now. Yes, I got splashed by the surf, and had a great view of El Castillo. You cannot see Havana without strolling the Malecon.
I was able to go with friends, as I strolled the Malecon, but didn't get a chance to see it at night, although my casa was not far from there, pity!! Next time.
I suggest you really see the Malecon at night and in the daytime. Check out any local bars along the way. There just isn't enough time in the day to see it all and I wish I had. Just means I need to get back there. Leave a Comment

El Castillo by YanetT from the Malecon, you can clearly see this castle/fort. I did not go inside (as I have been to El Morro in Santiago de Cuba) and they seem to be similar, but if you have not seen either fort, do check it out. I was using my telephoto lens for this shot (no digital cameras for me).
I did not go inside the castle, but to make the experence bearable, talk to the people who are guiding you, you may actually learn something. There is always something to be learned from visiting historical sites, so enjoy the experience and take what you can from it. Leave a Comment

by jenniferhen The sailing tours put on by the hotel. LAME!I hated the tour that we went on, it was through Jolly Roger, and the men were SLIME!!! This is the only bad experience that I had in Cuba, the men on this ship were pigs and I think that it was a complete waste of my time and my money, I would never go on this tour EVER again. We went on another tour called the 'Jeep Safari Tour' and were treated with respect and had an amazing time. Leave a Comment

Nobody mentioned it to us before! Be sure you have 25 peso left for your departure fee, in other way you will be stuck on Cuban airport! Leave a Comment

Take a calculator with you so you know the exact amount of Convertible Pesos coming to you. If you don’t have a calculator, do NOT accept any transaction that doesn’t come with a printed receipt. No printed receipt invariably means that you’re being short-changed. Ripping off tourists during money exchange transactions has become a very common occurrence. We never exchange our money anywherejust in hotel. There are no service charges to exchange money at a bank, so don’t listen to that crooked teller – demand honest service. Dond count on cash machines because if you find any they have 6 numbers pin code ( we have 4) Lots of Cubans working money exchange scams, including the flight check-in personnel at the airport. It goes without saying that any traveler is an idiot to exchange money anywhere except at a proper institution, or between trusted friends. Other big problem! Bring enough cash with you because most of our credit cards are not accepted. Any bank affiliated to US bank is not acceptable. It was a big problem for 80% of our friends. Who supposed that for example Yorkshire bank is connected to US. Only HSBC was usefull. Leave a Comment

by kwanou In the cigar factory in Pinar del Rio, the cigars aren't much cheaper than in Europe. If you want to buy cigars on the black market, you have to be a bit of a connoisseur. Some are the real kind, but sometimes they're just cheap cigars in a classy box. Leave a Comment
