A fun way to get from the Varadero Hoteles District to downtown Varadero is by COCO TAXI. They are the funniest looking little things. They are yellow, egg-shaped, 3-wheeled vehicles and zip around all over the place in Varadero and in Havana. They look slow but actually they go very fast.
Always negotiate a price before you get in. It was about 8 pesos ( $9.00 CDN ) to go from our Hotel to downtown Varadero, which is about 10 km.

Traveling around in Cuba can be hard sometimes ! There is a highway between north and south - laid by the Russians in the earlies - but to get to off road places - like El Nicho near Cienfuegos - or from Santiago to Baracoa - be prepared !!
Other way to travel around is by rented cars - not that cheap (appr.60 US dollars a day) but the cars are in a good condition and mostly AC is installed.
By train - this is another story - i once will try it !

  • A taxi is the most convenient mode of transport. Insist on using the taximeter. The smaller the car the cheaper the fare. Tips after driving with taximeter: 25 to 50 cents. Bring enough small change since taxidrivers are badly organised or often pretend not to have any change.

    Arriving the country
At the airport in Havana you can rent little luggage cars for 1 CUC to transport your luggage to the parking lot for taxis and buses. You can change money at the Casa de Cambio at baggage reclaim.
At the Varadero airport there will be many porters waiting to bring your luggage to the taxi or bus and it costs 1 CUC per porter.

    Leaving the country
At the airport a tax of 25 CUC will be charged in cash. It is recommendable to be at the airport 3 hours before scheduled departure.

Trasnportation in Cuba is a hell so my advice, use taxis whenever U can. There are particular taxis, in old american cars. But they cannot transport tourists so if U catch one of them arrange the price before departure, it cannot be more than 5 cuc and this is only the case if U are going from one extreme of the city to the other and they usually don´t do that. They have a route, they go from one point to another so is usual to take maybe 2 of them to go from one place to the other.

If U plan to go outside havana, U can rent a car, it can be really expensive in high season. Better, take Via Azul. This is a specialized bus agency that takes U everywhere on the island and is not too expensive.

The taxis are the best bet in Cuba. However, they pick up you and everyone along the way. Great way to meet people. The fare is the same no matter how many people are in the Taxi. I recommend seeing the City with a Cuban friend as they will know the proper fares. Cubans are some of the most friendly people I have ever met. The bus system seems a bit run down. But you can basically stand on any corner and a car or bus or someone will pick you up and take you where you want to go (or at least part of the way there). There are also bicycle and motorcycle drawn carriages which are a fun way to see the City. Here is a pic of one of those. I think it is drawn by a moped of some sort.

If you have a sincere desire to help the Cuban people who have been financially devastated by US Embargo, please see the following information and websites. Ironically, the charm of Cuba is its Old World - frozen-in-time-feel. This is also a result of US's not trading with them.

"HISTORY: The Cuba AIDS Project was founded in 1995. Alberto Montano (1953- 1999), as Executive Director, was instrumental in the formation of the Cuba AIDS Project. While in Washington, D.C., in 1995, Alberto met with President Clinton and discussed his plans to help Cuban HIV/AIDS patients. After Alberto's untimely death, current members of the Cuba AIDS Project expanded humanitarian activities from the US to the people of Cuba in compliance with recent changes in USA policy. "

If you want a unique experience, try taking taxi particulares. These cabs usually have a small sign in corner of windshield, and there is no meter, so ask about prices first. No seatbelts either, and the roads in Havana are horrendous, so hang on tight, you're in for a bumpy ride.

Because I "do nott" drive and because it is difficult to get around in Cuba, I decided to go from Havana to Santiago de Cuba (where my Cuban goddaughter lives) by bus. I initially came into Varadero airport and overnight in hotel there, then took bus to Havana (2 and a half hour ride), then stayed in Havana for a week.

The following week I went to the Viazul bus station in Vedado, 26 Ave. y Zoologico one hour before I left and bought ticket $51 one way to Stg. de Cuba. Check out the website www.viazul.com for schedules. But the bus I took left at 15:00 arrived in Stg. de Cuba at 6:50 am, leaves about the same time going from Stg. de Cuba to Havana.

Bus is relatively comfortable with air conditioning (gets quite hilly) bring sweater and jeans. A pillow is handed out to you, plus a rather cute touch (assist. driver comes around with a tray of candies) and you are given one each. There is a washroom (clean) at back of bus.

The bus stops at 8 stops on the way, such as Entrongue de Jaguey, Santa Clara, Sancti Spiritus, Ciego de Avila, Camaguey, Tunas, Holguin and Bayamo. You can get out at some stops for 15 mins or so and get a drink, food, listen to some live music in some places (my favourite part of the journey).

It did not get dark until 8 pm so I got to see some of the countryside (el campo), beautiful. Try the ride, it goes at night so you can sleep abit and the time passes quickly.

Next time I will try the train, more opportunities to walk around on train, talk to people, etc.

There is another bus (Astro),that is abit cheaper but less reliable. Viazul is ALWAYS on time. Check out cuba_junky site for detailed information on modes of transportation and ways to get around in Cuba.

For me, it was great experience and I would have no problem doing it again. My only complaint was the one area I wanted to get to (Marea del Portillo, Granma Province) is hard to get to by bus (no busses going there), need to get a taxi from Stg. de Cuba. So I did not go there to see my friends.

my favourite part of Cuba travel, is seeing the countryside, the farms (fincas) and houses (bohios).

My first experience with Cuba was being situated in small town near local farms in the Sierra Maestra Mountains and will always be in my heart, as my favourite memory of Cuba.
