Around Cuba

by Malecka

Alright, this is an interesting issue.See, I do have some insight, because in my 10-day stay in Cuba (too short) I managed to spend 4 days in Havana and then travel all the way to Bayamo (Granma province, all the way to the eastern part of the island), spend 3 days there and then return to Havana. Of course, I DO NOT suggest you do this, but it gave me a good opportunity to see what the bus system is like....First of... Tourists travel by Viazul. The buses are more than OK, they were on time and respected the "short breaks" during those 14 hours so... I can't complain about that. Oh, and they take good care of the luggage.I traveled on the night bus from Havana to Santiago de Cuba, though I got off at Bayamo. The ride was safe, a bit tiring but then again... 14 hours in a bus, need I add more, and it was NOT exactly cheap.Nope.I've forgotten how much I paid but... it was around 40 euros...

Getting to Cuba

by Malecka

Experts in "finding a reasonably priced flight" helped me with this one, especially because I bought the ticket like two weeks before traveling. Can't really say a lot, since I live in Skopje so traveling from here to anywhere by a plane is ... expensive. Anyways, I think the best options to reach Havana are either from Paris (AirFrance), Amsterdam (KLM, maybe) or Madrid (Iberia). I traveled with AirFrance and I can't complain.Havana's airport is OK, although you really gotta "earn" your entrance in the country :-) I mean, I needed no visa and I speak Spanish so it was fairly easy to fill in the ... short forms, but boy did I have to wait in queue. There are a lot of souvenirs to be bought there so... it's not that difficult to spend the last of pesos you got.Oh, and when you are leaving the country, you have to pay an airport tax (25 CUC, if I remember correctly)

Taxi against Private Cars

by cochinjew

It is against the law in Cuba for people with vehicles to transport tourists. Many take a chance and do it, but that is the law. you can take a government sanctioned taxi and if you dont mind paying the fare, it would be air conditioned, without a big chance of breaking down in the middle of the journey and free of suspicion from the police.

Hitch-hiking

by ania70pl

When on Cuba you can travel by different kinds of transportation, but don't expect they will be luxurious. Unless you travel with organized group, then they'll put you in air-conditioned bus.For Cubans public transportation is expensive so they travel how they can. Very often they hitch-hike.

Bus station Hustlers

by RKyle

P.S.Watch the Hustlers at Santiago bus terminal as they will ask you if you came from Trinidad, then say they are there to take you to your reserved Casa but it is full and they will take you to another one!Keep those phone numbers handy and some Cuban pesos for the phone.

Catch the 8:00 am bus from Trinidad for about 36 cuc and it takes 12 hours to get to Santiago arriving around 8:00 pm..You stop for a break on the way at a very clean new rest stop, jump off and quickly order your food or else you will have to wait for the others.I stay at one of two Casas near the terminal in Santiago.Sra. Bus travel

by RKyle

Are you arriving at Varadero or Havana?Pretty ambitious trip, you will be spending a lot of your time in buses and stations. If you can afford it car renting would be easier. Check your spare tire.In Vinales you can rent mopeds, hire a taxi(not too $$ in Vinles) or reserve a tour at the tour shop near the bus depot. I recomend the tour first then you will have an idea of the area and where you want to go. Costs about $30cuc. don't know if you have a casa in Vinales but "Benito's " is great! Two nights might be enough in Vinales. From Vinales you bus back to Havana, arrive mid afternoon and probably to late to catch the bus to Trinidad. If you want to carry on that day catch a late bus to Santa Clara or Camaguay and on to Trinidad or where ever after your stay. Just remember that when you are travelling by bus in the middle of Cuba make a reservation for the day that you want to travel on or...

Don't rent a Car in Cuba!!!

by Clang

All car renta companies in Cuba are run byr the Goverment. You have to give a deposit of 200 CUC (Cuban tourist currency) in cash ot directly debited from your credit card.Once you return the car they mention they dont have cash, or that the terminal isnt working. They tell you not to worry and that the desposit will appear in your statement 3 days later.Of course the money never comes back, and if you try to call them, nobody is responsible. They even told us we have to go and find the person who did it, because the company cannot do anything about it.Inside information, this scam is done in purpose by the goverment, as the employees cannot get the money for themselves.Unfortunatley there is no other option, Just avoid Cuba.

use public transport to explore greater Havana

by lukulu21

There is a lot to see in Havana, use public transport and taxis or just wave down someone in a car and ask them if their going your way. Many cubans are only too happy to make a few dollars by transporting you to wherever you want to go. And remember, many of the locals can give you some great tips for nightlife and other info. If you really want to adventure then hire a car......expensive, but gives you great freedom, and the motorways in Cuba are almost entirely free of traffic. Just be careful of backroads, many are only fit for tractors!
