To Cuba from Puerto Rico

by cochinjew

you can include PR and Cuba on the same visit and include RD if you like.. you can easily get to Santo Domingo from San Juan and from Santo Domingo there is twice weekly flights with aerocaribbean to Santiago de Cuba and Havana. the tickets have to be booked on line or bought in person in santo domingo. no one will sell you the tickets from puerto rico.Emily tours is the name of the agency in Santo Domingo. you might be even able to get a package which would turn out to be cheaper. you might be able to call emily tours in SD from US or PR.Bienvenidos a Cubawhen you get back to PR dont tell them you have been to Cuba, just tell them you have been to RD.

Viazul schedule

by RKyle

Go to Cuba-Junky and link on to Viazul's site for the schedules. I have travelled the length of the Island numerous times. Just make sure if you stop over mid island to make a reservation for your next trip as you might not get a seat when you want it.

cheap travel in cuba

by jan&mark

on our recent trip to cuba the people we were staying with told us to use local taxis(old cars) they are only suposed to take locals but will stop for anyone and are a fraction of the cost of an official tourist taxi. You only need to stand at the side of the road and flag one of the old cars down, they will ask where you are going and if they are going the right way it is a CUC cuban convirtable peso. They are very safe and it is a great way to get to know the locals. Also if you want to travel to other locations like vinales go to the bus station and try and ask another couple to share a taxi as it will cost the same as the bus but you get there twice as fast.

Car Hire and Internal Transportation

by cochinjew

Internal flights can be booked via the cubana website or the aerocaribbean website. you will save about 11 per cent if you book on line, since they cannot bill your credit card company on the artificial currency used for tourists, the CUC, it will be billed in USD. the same should be done for car rental and pick up the car at the airport. driving in cuba is easy enough.i would search cuba-junky.com which has the best information on Cuba and is overseen by a dutch lover of Cuba and its people.if you book your flights through an agency or airline, you may be able to get a deal with hotels included and also car rental included. it would be nice to drive one way to santiago and fly back in that way you could see a bit of the country.if a Cuban helps you in Cuba and there are many good people who would do it, they would tag on a few dollars to the price of what is being offered, a fair thing...

Driving from Havan to Trinidad and back

by russian_yaz

As I understood U'll be arriving to Jose Marti, Havana international airport and renting the car right there. From Havana to Trinidad U must drive about 4h, its a 300km trip. Search on my Transportation Tips for a specific tip about driving in Cuba. From Havana to Trinidad is easy, U could go all through the highway ("ocho vias" we call it in Cuba) until Cienfuegos and then from here there are 50km more until Trinidad. Back to havana U can either go back on your steps to Cienfuegos and then to Havana using the higway or U can go through the mountains until Santa Clara and from here take the highway until Havana. Be aware that there are few signs and U can find pot holes everywhere so drive carefully.

Flying from Cuba to Trinidad

by cochinjew

it is an unusual combination indeed. The fact that very few people fly this particular route is demonstrated by no direct flights or even connecting flights. as mentioned above: you can do havana to panama to trinidad with COPA.in any case, the price would be higher.Air Jamaica to MoBay and connect to Barbados and then connect directly to Tobagoor take a direct but not a non stop flight to trinidad from kingston on caribbean airlines.from cuba it is easier to fly to:nassauport au princesanto domingomontego bayoccasional flights to san martin, guadeloupe and martinique in central america/mexico but it would mean a back trackingpanamasan josecancunManaguain south americaeasy to get to caracas and you have to see whether there are connecting flights to trinidad. there used to be but i have not heard about them recently.

COCO TAXI

by LoriPori

A fun way to get from the Varadero Hoteles District to downtown Varadero is by COCO TAXI. They are the funniest looking little things. They are yellow, egg-shaped, 3-wheeled vehicles and zip around all over the place in Varadero and in Havana. They look slow but actually they go very fast.Always negotiate a price before you get in. It was about 8 pesos ( $9.00 CDN ) to go from our Hotel to downtown Varadero, which is about 10 km.

Coco taxis

by tomcarlson

while costing slightly more than your average taxi (primarily, i assume, because they cater to tourists), the wee coco taxis are quite an enjoyable mode of transportation. something like a motorized rickshaw, these little guys are a great way to see some sights while cruising through traffic. you can find coco taxis in front of several hotels in old havana, along the malecon and also in front of cine yara in vedado. there are several other locations as well, i'm sure...

Tuk-tuk

by rsudic

With coco-taxi, probably the cheapest way to circulate around smaller city (not Habana).Let's say to go to Casa de la trova with 20 other people, you can bargaining price hard and you'll have race around the city if you offer 1 CUC more to your driver. You don't care for danger if you had couple of coctails before. Streets in smaller cities are empty and you don't have to worry. If your driver has small radio, you'll enjoy salsa all the way to hotel. It's always easy to find them....

Truck transport - for budget travellers

by rsudic

Well I didn't try to use this kind of transport, but it's really common in Cuba especially between cities couse bus transport can be expensive for Cubans and often crowded. To use trucks you have to go on street/road and look for bunch of people together. Probably they wait for truck transport / or bus / or private car which drive in their direction and wait there for your vehicle (ask someone to asist you).Advantage: real cuban experience, lot of air in your hair (i'm bald), you'll catch some colour from sun, you'll mingle with cubans and meet some new friends (probably you'll be only foreigner in truck), you'll save money, in case you have kidney-stone...maybe you'll ger rid of it after this.
