Tren Frances

by rsudic

If you like trains then you should take Tren Frances on La Habana - Santiago de Cuba direction. Its overnight train with dep.from Habana Estacion central on 18:05 and arr. in Santiago at 06:35 (via Santa Clara and Camaguey). Return dep. from Santiago at 17:05, arr. 06:00.Seats are comfortable (it's ex european train), air conditioning, cafe, hostes in each coach, usually on time, not so many tourist around. One way fare 50 CUC (2nd class) for foreigners. Comparing to flight a bit expensive.

Fly with Cubana

by rsudic

Flying with Cubana is real experience. Russian aircraft, nice staff, some mosquitoes (i killed 12 during flight), strange noise (probably engine). For internal long distance like Habana - Santiago...very good option (108 USD one way).Offices in all big cities.

Viazul bus company

by batyr76

Viazul is the major bus-company in Cuba. They will take you to all the bigger cities, comfortably, relatively cheap and on time. Havana to Trinidad costs CUC 20, and takes 6 hours. Havana to Santiago CUC 51, 12/16 hrs (express/regular). Havana to Varadero CUC 10, 3 hrs.Havana to Viñales CUC 12, 3 hrs. IMPORTANT: the bus station in Havana is a little bit out of town, and to get there from down-town will cost you approx CUC 3-5 by cab. It is possible to join some of the many guided excursions that leaves Havana every day to Viñales, Trinidad etc. and buy just a one-way ticket, if they have seats left. It is a little bit more expensive than to travel with Viazul, but it saves you the taxi-trip to the station, and is faster. Ask the tourist-agency in Hotel Sevilla, they were very helpful!

By car

by Helga67

Renting a car in Cuba is quite expensive, make sure you already book it at home. When you would like to explore Cuba on your own and want to go off the beaten path to Cuba's natural beauties, it's the best way of transportation, as other public transportation is almost non-existing. Make sure you bring a good road map from home because there are almost no road signs and maps in Cuba are not good. You will need a good orientation, or at least some knowledge of Spanish to ask the locals for directions. Roads are not always in the best shape and rather empty apart from horse carts, pedestrians, bicycles, old timers, and some trucks. It is best not to drive at night, as there are many potholes and no lights.Gasoline was not so difficult to obtain. You will receive a good map with indication of the petrol stations at your car rental company. Just make sure you don't wait until the last moment...

By air

by Helga67

Arriving the countryAt the airport in Havana you can rent little luggage cars for 1 CUC to transport your luggage to the parking lot for taxis and buses. You can change money at the Casa de Cambio at baggage reclaim. At the Varadero airport there will be many porters waiting to bring your luggage to the taxi or bus and it costs 1 CUC per porter.Leaving the countryAt the airport a tax of 25 CUC will be charged in cash. It is recommendable to be at the airport 3 hours before scheduled departure.

Taxi

by Helga67

A taxi is the most convenient mode of transport. Insist on using the taximeter. The smaller the car the cheaper the fare. Tips after driving with taximeter: 25 to 50 cents. Bring enough small change since taxidrivers are badly organised or often pretend not to have any change.

Public transportation

by Helga67

A public tranport system is almost inexistant unless you want to use the totally overloaded buses or trucks, especially in Havana. In Havana, there is the 'camel': a regular truck towing a trailer designed for passengers. The name is derived from the shape of the trailer which dips down in the middle, giving a two humped appearance.

Santa Clara to Trinidad

by raykey

A beautiful drive not to be missed is the drive up into the Sierra De Escambray mountains between Santa Clara and Trinidad. The road can be steep and narrow in places but perfectly safe and the views can be spectacular on the right day. One minute you can be mist and the next you can be in brilliant sunshine, all adding to the beautiful scenery of Cuba. The drive takes around two to three hours depending on conditions and how many times you want to stop and take in the vistas.Without doubt a route worth taking.

Try to ride one of these

by cochinjew

Camellos or Camels as they are called introduced during the early years of the Special Period to ease difficulties of transport. I have always wanted to take one that leaves from Havana LIbre all the way to La Lisa, but no one of my cuban friends would come with me..
