Hitch hiking in cuba

by TOFFY

Hitch hiking in Cuba is very difficult for two reasons - a) there are not a lot of carsand b) the whole country is competing with you. There is not a lot of public transportation throughout Cuba (with the exception of Havana) and consequently everyone is looking for a lift. As a Cuban, if you have a vehicle of any kind, it is the law that you pick up hitch hikers. You are the public transportation. You will see men in suits, doctors and nurses in uniform, and party goers all dolled up, jumping into the back of a dump truck, or hanging off whatever moves. If you are a tourist with a car, you are under no obligation to pick up anyone, although they will think you odd if you don't when your car is empty. But here's a tip. If you have a car, pick up some people and really start to learn the ins and outs of Cuba. If you have the time, drive your passenger all the way home and most likely you...

Travelling to and around

by GeethaSingam

From the UK, cheapest and probably safest way to get to Cuba is to fly one of the chartered flights there. Takes about 8hrs there and 10hrs back due to wind. Cuba does have an airline but it is full of aircraft from the USSR 1960s that they have few spare parts for so not very safe inless you like to live on the edge. Inside Cuba it is not safe to fly internally as these same Russian old aircraft are almost ready to pack it in. Best way to get around Cuba is either by tour coaches because these are targeted at tourists so have air conditioning, quite comfortable, and nice coach seats. Cuba is huge so takes long time on the roads. They do have a shortage of petrol so other buses usually have long cues of Cubans on the road waiting and government vehicles are obliged to give locals a ride when they are waiting by the road. Taxis are available through hotels so if you have the money (they...

Travel from Varadero to Havana

by Calor

Geting around en Havana is relatively simple..there are an abundance of taxis and some 'private taxis'. i.e they are just regular people who offer taxi services. To get from Varadero where we stayed to Havana, we paid 20USD per person return, this gave us a nice air-conditioned bus with toilet facilities. We caught the earliest bus which left the station at 7am. It's a 2 hour drive and the bus stops off so you can stretch your legs.I've heard someone mention they paid 15USD return, but we bought our ticket from the agent at the station and it was 20USD...at least expect to pay anything between 15-20USD.Who knows when you arrive en Havana, you may be lucky to get a ride in a vintage automobile, a common site in Havana.

A good chauffeur

by RickL

Hugo Franco son:Ernesto speaks some English Hugo is our uncle who owns a classic American car. He speaks some English and knows Havana very well. If you need someone to speak better English his son Ernesto can drive as well and also owns a similar American sedan. They can also help with casa reservations or paladare recommendations. He would charge no more than $30 USD a day depending on how much you wish to use him. He is quite flexible. We can notify him if you wish to reserve his services.

Rent a car in Cuba

by Sergio25

The best way to travel around the cuba - it's to rent a car. There are a lot places there to rent but some time it's difficult to find a car what you want. Most of them are not in good conditions. But anyhow it's possible to find. Some offices are work 24 hrs a day. My advise to buy a good road map (on unusual directions no road signs). People are very friendly and everybody will show you direction (inland only on spanish). Petrol costs abt 0,85 cent or abt 1$. No problems with petrol stations. Too many bicycals on roads.

Really Cool Taxi

by snoopycat

Don't miss taking a taxi ride in those really cool cars. An evening drive in a 1950's-era convertible is a must when visiting Havana.Make some excuse for doing this.....even if it's just a ride to the rum store to stock up for the night!!

Driving

by jpierrep

I recently returned from a Cuban driving experience. Prior to leaving I heard about the horrors of driving in Cuba. I decided to do it anyways. To my surprise it was a pleasure. There is virtually no traffic on Cuban highways, there are plenty of gas stations (.90 us cents/litre), and somewhat smooth. The fact that there is no traffic, is a bonus. The Autopista,is a pleasure . Top speeds in excess of 160 kmh are easily attainable. Just be cautious on secondary roads. Yes indeed the are horses, and bicycles on the roads, but i never found them to be hazardous. The rental car company was very professional, and provided a clean newer model car in excellent condition. No ripoffs, everything was explained up front, and no hiddeen charges upon return.
