Photographing Military

by elgarbo

According to everything I've read, it's a big offence to be caught photographing military buildings or police stations or port facilities in Cuba. The obvious reason is because they fear spies, and those who might make attacks on such institutions. If you see something like that, try to resist the urge to photography it - I can't imagine time in a Cuban jail would be particularly pleasant. However, if you simply cannot resist the urge (we couldn't) at least be discreet about it. We captured this lovely photo of some nasty looking missiles from the Morro Fort in Havana.

Swindlers - Never change money on the street

by Libertad

La Habana is full of hustlers who will try to take your money any way possible. Do not be misled by this fact. There a whole lot of good people in Cuba, but those will not approach you in the street. It is even more dangerous to Spanish speakers as Cubans do quite well in their mother tongue. Pay attention to swindlers; they will try to sell you Cuban Pesos calling them "Centrales" as if they were "Convertibles". Each CUC equals 24 CUP. Please, study the banknotes carefully and NEVER EVER change in the street. Never believe anything regarding money outside a bank or a CADECA. They will make you believe you cannot enter a Cuban Bank if you are not Cuban and similar kafkian bogus arguments will follow. Do never say it is your first time in La Habana. This is the question they make to know if you are the suitable victim. You can be stolen ALL your money.

Weather...remember hurricane season

by russian_yaz

Some people ask about hurricanes, rain and in general about the weather in Cuba. Well in Cuba there are usually two big season, rainy and dry season. When talking about rainy is really rainy. U can be stuck anywhere for several hours with reallly heavy rains. During april to june is usual to have an afternoon rain, some times not so strong and long so if U're planning to visit cuba at this time, take an unmbrella with U.Hurricanes are really dangerous and catastrofic events. The season starst 1st of june until 30rd november. The most dangerous months are considered to be october and november. Thanks to to the effort of revolution these days in Cuba is hard to spect deaths in a hurricane. The meteorology institute usually gives even hourly reports when the hurricane is really dangerous and close to cuba. People living in old houses with the danger of crumbling down are taken to safe...

Rebar

by RickL

This is the new view from my family's front balcony. They recently paid to have the entire house enclosed in rebar protection. Theft is a big problem in Cuba particularly between Cubans. Be careful with all your valuables and only bring what is necessary.

Remember where you are

by melosh

How you ask a question can make a big difference in the answer you get in a police state. It is probably best to just stay clear of political comment, but non-political questions still can be a part your visit. I quickly learned that when I asked a direct question, I got a dull answer, but when I set the question up the right way, I got a more open discussion. For example, when I started a question with, "In my small home town we have struggled with the problem of . . ., do you share this problem? I got detailed answers. This did better than, "Do you have trouble keeping up with new developments in medicine?"

You'll get hassle everywhere you go...

by liberoj

Im amazed by the Cuban reviews which barely mention the ceaseless hassle that you get on this island. Meand my girlfriend travelled everywhere for over a month and though we had a great time, it was partly spoiled by the feeling that most of the people were simply trying to get our money and would not leave us alone. Continual hassle for rooms, paladars, cigars and girls began to get very irritating and in some places it was quite intimidating for my girlfriend(especially pinar del rio and santiago de cuba). In Santiago particularly my girlfriend got really freaked out by the locals who would just not leave her alone, while i was not impressed by the number of prostitues (many clearly only little girls) who were with the tourists. Now I accept that Cuba is a poor country and the people are desperate, but that does not mean that these things should simply be brushed off and ignored. Yes...

More thefts in Havana

by YanetT

Although Cuba is still very safe, I have noticed that there is more crime, and tourists should be aware of who is around you. Do not carry your passport with you, take very little money, do not wear jewellery and hang onto your backpacks.
