Pickpocket, Stealing or Robbery

by prepost

Okay below are some of the stories I have experienced or heard from my trip:- I was pick pocked at Casa de la Musica in Miramar (near La Havana). It was a two-men operation. One distracted me and another pickpocketed me. Luckily I only lost a camera bag and a roll of used film. Even more lucky is that I managed to get them back by tricking one of the con men into thinking that I will give him reward. Of course I did not after he brought both items back - what was mine belonged to me. Lessons learnt: Choose clothes with zipper pockets if possible and keep wallets in hard-to-reach pockets. DO NOT keep credit cards in your wallet. Keep them in your money belt.- We witnessed a robbery and chase in Vedado. It was around noon on a bright day. Hard to believe the couple was attacked inside an attraction (Nécropolis Cristobal Colón). Apparently two locals held up the man and snatched a fanny...

Orientals: Be Aware of Name-calling!

by prepost

If you look oriental, you will be called "china" or "chino", _many_ times.Throughout my trip across Cuba, I have received many name calling because of my ethnic background. I was called or whistled or stopped on many occassions simply because I look Chinese. Of course being a young female solo traveller didn't help much either. How frequent you ask? Well, I am not really exaggerating when I say that if I got a dollar for every time I was called "china" or "chineta", it would pay for my trip, _ten_ times. Apparently a lot of Cubans don't even differentiate Chinese and non-Chinese. So if you look orientals, chances are you will be called "china" or "chino". It took me a while to figure out that the "china"s are not in a bad way, in fact, it is because the Cubans like asians, and it is their way of saying "hi". Still, it was hard to adjust, and stopping every 10 seconds when I tried to...

Water and Ice

by Natalllya

Make sure to only drink bottled water and make sure your ice cubes aren't made from tap water. I seem to have the stomach of steel so stuff like that doesn't really affect me. However, everyone else around me was pretty sick. Take caution with water!

Meeting a local....

by worldcam

The best way, and really only way, to know the country is to meet a local. And in Cuba, the only way to do that is to take an organized tour and hope to talk to the local guide individually -- apart from the group. Cuban's are not allowed to interact with foreigners. They will be friendly with you but also will keep their distance. Be careful how you approach your topics of conversation and mindful of who is listening. You can, however, build a friendship - carefully if only for a day.

Watch what you say.....

by worldcam

Caution is the name of the game. Certain topics are not on the table for discussion -- democracy and Castro are two right off the top. Money and the way of life are two right next in line. Watch what you say and to whom you say it.

Driving in Cuba

by frecklesoup

You may be tempted to rent a car to travel around Cuba. It truly is the best way to see the country. However, it can be difficult (and potentially dangerous) for a number of reasons. 1. Outside of Havana there are NO roadsigns. Get a detailed map, follow it closely, ask directions, then ask someone else, and ask someone else. (Cubans LOVE to help -- even if they dont know the answer!)2. If you speak Spanish, it will help!3. DO NOT DRIVE AFTER DARK. We were told this numerous times. The problem is, we kept getting lost (no road signs) and ended up out past sunset every time. It was very sketchy! Because...4. There are potholes the size of small builidings and...5. There are no street lights, few other cars on the road (and many dont have headlights)... But there are lots of other things (and people) on the roads. Like bicycles, horses, oxen, etc... Try finding the one-lane country road...

Dope - Just don't do it!

by TOFFY

Do not, under any circumstances, carry dope or deal with anyone on the subject. This is something the authorities take very seriously, and you may not see the light of day for a while if caught.Stick to alcohol.

PEOPLE ARE NOT ALWAYS AS YOU SEE THEM!!

by aneaglewhensheflies

If you are a real " sap-sucker" as I am for "BIG-BROWN EYES " staring up at you from the sweetest brown face----then beware of giving Too Much dollars and bobbles and even the clothes on your back to the Children who come begging to you--- and most sent by their parents who are standing off to the side.Or the (what -you-think as SINGLE MOM ) with a raft of children to feed who comes standing before you with such a SAD & FORLORN LOOK of DOOM in HER EYES and on HER FACE ----but if you veer YOUR eyes off to the side you will see her husband or partner waiting to scoop the $ or whatever yu give to her - from her immediately...The photo below is of school children being taken on a school excursion by the teacher.

No lights !

by Blanula

In Cuba, there is no law to have lights turned on when you drive a car at night. Don't be surprised if you see a candle in a bucket on the back of a vehicle - or no candle or light at all. Drive very slowly at night!
