Speeding and Parking Tickets!

by jadedmuse

Stay vigilant - no matter where you are, if you're in a rental car, there's sure to be a policeman somewhere close by, ready to issue you a ticket. We almost got a ticket just for stopping momentarily, while I got a photo of a monument in the Plaza de la Revolucion in Havana - I had one foot in the car while it was running, and one foot on the ground, aiming my camera, and before I knew it, bam - a cop was trying to give me a ticket! Also, beware of speeding. No, there aren't really any speed limit signs posted - but that won't stop someone from trying to give you a ticket anyways. They usually run around $10 per infraction. If you've got a rental car, the policeman will simply write it down on your rental agreement which you must keep in your car at all times - and you'll pay it to the rental car service when you return your car....it's all State-owned. Thankfully, we'd rented a car two...

Human Rights in Cuba!!!

by mannymiami

My Cuba is going through a rough time with the tyrant that is running the country. In the past week 78 dissidents have been put into jails and sentence to outstanding prison terms and has executed three young men for trying to flee the island on a boat with other passengers... The whole World is begining to realize that Castro is a prehistoric tyrant that is afraid of losing power. I ask everyone that cares about this matter to write to the counslers and embassador so that there represenitive of there country at the United Nations vote against Cuba for violating Human Rights on the island..

JINETERO / JINETERA

by swesn

This is the nickname for male and female prostitutes respectively. As some restaurants and stores only take US-dollars, some people try to prostitute themselves to tourists in the hope of getting the chance to eat in those fancy restaurants or getting some presents bought from the US-dollar stores.Due to the proliferation of this, sometimes, waiters may refuse to serve Cubans in restaurants, assuming them to be prostitutes. This can work against tourists who happen to look like Cubans, namely, people of African origins. A few times, I saw police stopping to check the Identity Cards of black Cuban guys sitting innocently on park benches. Once, I saw a police shouting to a black man who was walking with two Caucasian ladies. The man claimed he was from USA and spoke no Spanish and the police let him off, as he was obviously a tourist. If he was not a tourist but a Cuban, hanging around with...

Beware of hurricanes !!

by janchan

The hurricane season usually starts from June / July ... until the end of November. Sometimes the wind can be really strong and it may rain for several days. When the sea is very rough, it is impossible to walk on the Malecón without getting soaked by the waves, and often they close a part of it because it can be dangerous for the cars too...

FOREIGNER'S SPECIAL PRICE

by swesn

Some foreigners go through their entire Cuban holiday without ever seeing Cuban Pesos. These are nearly always those on packaged tours. Afterall, everything they ever need in restaurants, bars, souvenir stalls and hotels are priced in US-dollars.For independent tourists, perhaps you can also get away without any Cuban Pesos. The 'casa particulars' and 'paladares' or home-cooked meals prepared by your host are all charged in US-dollars.For independent and cheapie tourists, change some Cuban Pesos! I changed US$10 and got 260 Cuban pesos. For two weeks, I spent them with difficulty for things are just so cheap in pesos. While I admit there are not that many things available in Cuban pesos, you can still buy fruits from markets and syrup drinks, sugarcane juice or ham sandwich from street-side stalls here and there. You can do a lot more Cuban things, like WATCH A CUBAN MOVIE for 1 Cuban...

TOURISTS ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO HITCH-HIKE

by swesn

Due to poor and expensive public transportation, lack of ability to afford cars and basically petrol shortage, hitch-hiking is a very common practice here in Cuba. I learnt that stopping for hitch-hikers is obligatory for drivers. The drivers usually cannot ask much money from the hitch-hikers because fellow Cubans simply do not have much money anyway. What about tourists?, I wondered. Why get Cuban Pesos from them when they can milk US dollars? However, I learnt that if a local, and not a taxi, is caught picking up tourists, he can be fined US$1500 and might even lose the car. Even if a Cuban friend or your host of the ‘casa particular’ is giving you a lift for free, the police will not believe him. Tourists must take taxis and authorised buses.

DISCRIMINATIONS AGAINST CUBANS

by swesn

Sadly, US-dollar restaurants and hotels are discriminated against Cubans. The state somehow tries to separate tourists and locals. I supposed, the state does not want the usual sun-sand-sea-sequins tourists to know how the real life of a typical Cuban is like. They just want the tourists to bake their brains on the beaches, splash around in the pristine Carribean seas, drink loads of alcohol and enjoy the feathers and sequins in cabaret shows. Also, with 26 Cuban pesos = US$1, how can any Cubans afford the same entertainment spots as tourists? I was told a doctor earns about US$20 a month! So, even if you have a Cuban friend whom you INVITE to a restaurant, the waiter may refuse to serve him or her.
