  • Dominica has one of only two boiling lakes in the world, and it is the larger one. The other is in New Zealand.
The boiling lake exists where a stream flows into an active volcanic crater. The hot gasses coming from the centre of the crater heat the water to almost boiling point.

Besides the lovely natural spots on the island--from hikes to the different waterfalls, the Boiling Lake, the Freshwater Lake and the Emerald Pool--the Carib Territory is an interesting area to visit. Caribs were believed to have migrated to the islands from South America by boat and there's a small population still living on Dominica. Besides an interesting view of the culture, you'll also find beautiful woven handicrafts. There is also some fine hiking opportunities in this area as well--one of the nicest is the walk to the Escalier Tete Chien (shown in the picture). Islanders call a snake a tete chien (dog's head), and the literal translation of the name is snake's staircase. Seeing the formation, you can see why.

One of the highlights of my trip was a bird watching tour I did with forester, Stephen Durand. I am, by no means, an avid birder, but I was lucky enough to go on this trip with the daughter of an ornithologist and was 'roped' into searching for the elusive Sisserou and Jaco (or Red-necked) parrots. Both can only be found on Dominica and there are only a very small number of Sisserous left--this impressive bird graces the Dominican flag.
Mr. Stephen Durand was extremely knowledgable, friendly and kind. Marie-Louise from Roxy's arranged the tour for us and we were thankful. Stephen went out of his way to ensure a great trip and was just a great guy--we still talk about him to this day! As a forester, he had actually worked to create the Syndicate Trail.

There are a lot of different hiking opportunites and natural wonders that you can take in on this beautiful island...if we only had had the time...

This is the beautiful Middleham waterfall. The hike to the falls was fairly easy (about one hour from the maid road) until you get to the slippery rocks. The great thing about the hike was that we did not meet one person along the way. The experience of having this huge waterfall crash into a pool of water just below you right in front of your face was astounding. While taking it all in, a blue hummingbird (found only on Guadeloupe and Dominica) came within about a foot of us. What an experience to have a rare hummingbird flying about as you are cooled down by the mist of the falls! We were so close, I couldn't even get all of the waterfall in one frame!

  • Must see the Boiling lake, excellent place to visit. But it requires climbing a mountain for about 3/4 hours. And it can get extremly hot especially when you reach the peak.
    Sulphur springs
Trafulgar falls I'll check on the name then correct it. There are hot spots in the water falls where you can bathe. If you like flowers and birds visit the botanic gardens.
Iam a beach person and if you like the beach too. Dominica is full of them. Donkey beach was was the closet beach to where I was staying. It has black sand unusal and beautiful. There is a small bar where you can buy your drinks, beer as well as soft. While I was there, every Sunday they had a sound system on the beach, loads of people gathered, it was like on big beach party. It didn't finish until eveyon had gone.

Do and see everything. It is a must. I went for a month with my family and I saw a lot.Only regret didn't really have enough money to Island hop. If you can it is a must, see as many Islands as you can.
There will be pictures as soon as I can find them.

  • Directions: The location of the boiling lake (pictured below)is on top of a mountain. Info will come soon.

    Titou Gorge

  • The attraction of the gorge is the opportunity to swim through the narrow gap in the rock. At the mouth of the gorge is a warm waterfall originating from the volcanic areas in the moutains. You go on from there, swimming over the boulder-covered bed of the river. The gorge narrows to only about one metre (three feet) wide in places and at other points widens to about 5 or 10 metres. The water is very shallow in places, and deep in others. Apart from a strong current, it is relatively easy to reach the next waterfall. You could try to climb the 'fall, but we gave up at that point. If you go with a guide from KHATS (see elsewhere for details) he will provide you with a life vest which makes it safe for any reasonable swimmer.
Watch out for the rocks - it is quite easy to get a graze, and the water is quite cold.
It will only take about five minutes to reach the first waterfall, and less to return to the mouth of the gorge because the current is helping you.

    The Boiling Lake

  • If you go to Dominica, you have to visit the Boiling Lake. This lake is the second largest boiling lake in the World...or the largest in the Western Hemisphere (the biggest is in New Zealand). I went with a LARGE group...which is unusual. Normally, you hire a guide and transport to the start of the trail. Normally groups are small...ranging from 2-10. I went with a group from a university. Wasn't to pleased with our particular guides. They went at their pace and finished before all of us. They aren't used to bringing so many people though. The hike itself is tough. I am fairly active and struggled a bit with the stairs. You have to climb over 3 mountains and cross a few rivers. Do not expect to keep your shoes dry or clean. It often rains and can get a bit cold. Bring a rain jacket and good walking shoes that you don't mind getting filthy. The walk is very fun though. Beautiful scenery. The Valley of Desolation is amazing. Some guides actually boil eggs in the boiling water. Make sure you swim in a natural pool. Very warm...no ticket booths...no locker rooms...NATURAL! The lake was a bit disapointing after the 3 hour hike there. But, you have to witness it. The experience is terrific. But...realize that you might be extremely sore after. There are so many stairs. Prepare by doing the stair master and plan on taking a very easy day after. Some people were so mentally and physically drained after...didn't help that we were all dirty and soaked! But...you must do it!

  • Directions: its in a small village...Laudat. The trail at least. Not so far from Rosseau.

    Hot Waterfall Slides!!!
  • Updated By PrunedInWA on May 20, 2004

  • Imagine a waterfall in all of it's glory. You see locals diving into pools at various landings from 25 feet in the air. Lush greenery all around, you decide to go for a swim and oh my....someone's heated this baby up! It's like a hot tub! You see a few people sit at the edge of the pool and then disappear. So, you follow.

Trafalgar Falls is a hot water waterslide. Well, quite a few actually. The slides are small and short, nothing daunting. They are great fun because they're slippery not too many sharp edges. Naturally. I'm talking some kind of local red clay. The staining kind. In other words, don't wear a white swimsuit.

This is the place you'll talk about the rest of your life! I am!

One more word of caution, however. Your clothes should be fine to leave while you play, but keep your valuables in a waterproof bag on your person. I had an inexpensive "NY" watch stolen from in between all of my clothes. No big loss, but it could have been.

  • Its in the southeast, direction Soufriere- Scotts Head.

Take the new boardwalk to the end of the beach, be carefull of the stones.
There is a rubber mat here to help to go into the water.
The beach is famous for the volcanic underwater hot spring. You actually swim through the tiny bubbles. Enjoy the ocean, some coral and the fishes too.
