Rosseau...the capital
Rosseau is such a trip! Coming from a large US city...its cute to think...this is their bustling capital city. Rosseau is a mess of old, Caribean homes mixed with loads of friendly locals, blaring Soca beats, and delicious food everywhere. The main banks are in Rosseau...get your money here! Their is a cool church that you can see from town. Go to the coast and view the Morne Trois Pitons are in the back. Towering green mountains in perfect view from the cities port! Terrific photo opps! Beware...the cruise ship comes in here and all the markets and shops near them are a bit cheesy and expensive. People are super nice, but beware of a few beggers and weirdos (not too many though). By the way, its pronounced..Rose-Oh. Great place to view locals and get a Kubuli beer!

So many rivers, so many...
So many rivers, so many forests, so many trails to hike. Don't miss Trafalgar falls, or the boiling lake. And if you feel adventurous, get in the water and check out the underwater hot springs too.

The springs at trafalgar falls
hot and cold mineral springs - the tough bit is getting out of them. It's a bit of a hike, but worth it.

water that doesn't stop falling
A trip to the Space mountain Falls was the highlight of my visit. A 2 hour hike through incredibly lush rainforest, up and up and up until reaching a series of 5 waterfalls and cascades, one above the next above the next.
Each waterfall is completely different and climbing through the falls to reach the higher ones was a humungous wet challenge.
The views spectacular, the falls incredible, and the hike was quite a challenge.

    Emerald Pool
At the base of a gentle 40-foot waterfall, Emerald Pool is one of Dominica’s most popular tourist destinations. Reached via an easy 0.3 mile walk through the rainforest, the pool is particular popular with cruise ship passengers (try to arrive early or late in the afternoon before or after the cruise ship folks have visited).

Roseau charms you with its buildings and people
Dominica's Capital City of Roseau - Dominica
    Dominica's Capital City of
    Roseau

I found Dominica's small capital city of Roseau (pronounced ruse-oh) to be like a beautiful picture postcard; colorful buildings marching down from the lofty, undulating green ridges, which hem the town in on one side while crystal clear seawater contains its growth on its other side. Approaching from the sea, what you see first is a street full of old British colonial buildings sparkling in the overhead sun. The oldest buildings all seem to have jalousies and gingerbread porches or balconies. The friendly Creole women can be seen selling everything from trinkets and baskets to bananas and even livestock. Many of the men are scurrying about trying to get the tourists to take a tour or visit a shop or they even just stand in small groups smiling and talking.

Arriving in Dominica is like stepping into the past. There are very few modern buildings, not much traffic and, I was told, almost no crime. It is a place that modern tourism seems to have largely bypassed. And therein, I think, lies its charm. It doesn't have much in the way of beach areas, but a greater portion of Dominica is still covered by rain forest than any other major Caribbean island. Blend its remarkable natural gifts with maybe the most friendly people I've come across in the Caribbean, and you've got all of the makings of an island that you never want to leave.

I’ll bet that you fall in love with this poor but colorful place before you realize it. It’s charm reaches out to you from its natural setting, its buildings and its people alike.

    Milton Falls
If you go out to Syndicate or Morne Diablotins you might as well stop and take in the short , easy and satisfying trek to Milton Falls. At a brisk pace, it took only 40 - 50 minutes return to complete and I left with a smile on my face. Ask your tour guide to take you there. For the guideless - Along the road to Syndicate look for a shack on the left hand side with a small hand painted (white background) sign that says "Whitnel". A few feet past the shed on the right hand side of the road you will see a dirt road going into farming land . Park there. Although signs warn of 'no trespassing' and made me wary to continue, I asked field workers and a passing motorist and all said it was o.k. to go to the falls. Take the dirt road straight up, do not go right. Passing through the tropical farmers fields was interesting to me as it was so far out of my normal existence. I passed a workers shed close to the road and asked if they had any cold drinks to sell. I bought a Kubuli Beer for $2 US. The river is was only 2 minutes past this shed. Go up stream following the river.
