Toucari, Batali & Mero Beach

by iamcan

> Toucari Beach - NW coast -- Only stopped for a picture on my way to Capucine, looked like a nice quiet spot for a snorkel. > Batali Beach - mid west coast -- Stopped here for a river bath and took a stroll on the stone beach. > Mero Beach - mid west coast -- Visited here on two different trips. The first time I was on the beach in front of Castaways resort, watching the sunset. You can use Castaways facility's for a small fee. It has a very nice setting on the sand beach with a airy bar. The second visit was further down the beach on the opposite side of a river that breaks it. Here the feeling is more of a community beach. Nice spot with at least one beach bar, store and shower. My favorite west coast beach for swimming.

Snokeling

by iamcan

> Scotts Head --Park on the isthmus. Walk to the top of Scotts head for nice views. Snorkel in the protected cove out to a drop off. > Champagne Beach --Once on the rock beach turn left and head till the end. Snorkel out from there. Bubbles rise from the sea floor. Touch the sand bottom and it feels warm. Push your hand under the sand and it is hot!! > Rodney's Rock -- An interesting rock to snorkel around. A fair walk along a stone beach from the parking. > Cabrits National Park -- Once inside the park goto the shore line. Follow the stone beach to a straight line of buoys marking a snorkeling area. -- The stone beaches are hard on the feet. Sturdy footwear is advisable.

Jacko Steps

by iamcan

My Jacko Steps hike was filled with the discovery of plants, fruit, product & farming techniques as shown by my guide. The history of the steps makers, runaway slaves called Maroons, is what put this hike on my must do list. It was a memorable outing which included a river crossing, farm visit and swim.

Chemin Letang Trail

by iamcan

The trails sign post is on the main road between Freshwater & Boeri Lake. It intersects with the fresh water lake trail at a sign post for Grand Fond. The trail winds its way slowly descending the mountain side. A noticeable temperature and vegetation change occurs as the paths elevation drops. Panoramic views present themselves every so often. You will pass a small water fall and later cross a river before the trail widens into a dirt track road. After walking on this road for 15 minutes I decided to turn back as the day was getting later. Collecting the trail tape I laid on the way down gave me comfort in knowing I was headed in the right direction. I caught a brief view of an agouti as it scampered across the trail. The peace and solitude of this trail had a healing quality about it. I recommend starting this trek before 10 a.m.

Glassy Trail

Short steep trail found in Boetica. Nice vegetation, in areas vines cascade down from the canopy above. Saw many humming birds. Take a dip in the pool created in the lava flow. All the rocks on the flow are fused in place.

Chaudiere Pool

by iamcan

Chaudiere Pool (sometimes called the Bense Pool) can be found after driving through the village of Bense ,situated on the northeast side of the island near Calibishe. A bumpy road leads you to the trail head. A reasonably steep trail takes you down to a fork in the river. Cross the first river and continue up the second to reach the pool. You can jump into the pool from the rocks on the sides. It was fun!! I was told you can take a loop trail on return but I just back tracked. If your lucky you may see parrots. There is a store on the left once you return to the village, a good place to get a snack and cold drink. The hike is not long and the scenery is beautiful. A must do if you are in the area.

Capucin Trail

by iamcan

At the trail head I met a couple from Guadeloupe along with a twin brother from Reunion Island. They welcomed me to join them on the hike. Off to the left of where the drivable road ends you can find "The Coronel " ( as one local described it) , an old cannon. If you spent some time looking around this area you will find spectacular views. The trail was peaceful but quite dense. At points you can see the neighboring Islands of Guadeloupe and Les Saints. My compainons decided to turn around after a hour or so but the discovery rush called me to keep going. I travelled 15 minutes further and came across unhappy pigs (wild??) and quickly turned around. I wound up catching my new found friends and later sharing lunch.

Wavine Cyrique

by iamcan

Wavine Cyrique is found between Rosalie and La Plaine. I stopped at it only by chance thinking it was something else. From the sign on the main road you drive up a steep ridge to the end then follow a path to a cliff. The climb down (marked by a plastic jug on a stick when I was there) is a thrill. You must scamper down using a series of ropes and natural roots. Tough but not all that long. Wet conditions could make the descent dangerous. Once you get to the bottom you are greeted by a beautiful black sand beach. It sparkles in the sun. After a short hike north (left when facing the water) there is a water fall cascading down from the top of the cliffs.

Sari Sari Falls

by iamcan

The trail head for Sari Sari Falls is found in the village of La Plaine on the east coast. The trail has some markers but I believe they will take you to the top of the falls. A guide (just ask around for one in La Plaine ) will be able to safely aid you around and over the many slippery boulders to arrive at the base. At certain times of the year flash flooding occurs here. Best to take a guide! You can also trek to Boli Falls from this area, time did not allow me to do so.

Emerald Pool

This is a beautiful waterfall cascading into a mountain pool. It requires a short (guided) walk and pretty extensive drive (from most hotels) to get to. There are also generally good souveneer stands set up outside.
