Dinner & Hiking with Wendy's Tours

by wnbfcal

Making reservations with Weny (Wendy's Tours) is easy. Wendy enjoys cooking food for small or large groups, and he comes to your place upon request. One of our favorite dishes is Calilou. We drove to a place where Wendy buys fish, and Wendy met us later at our place when he prepared the fish and vegetable soup right in front of us. It was fun to watch the process, including how he made milk portion of the Calilou from a coconut. The meal was amazing, especially when having many Kabuli's!!

Boiling Lake

by iamcan

Started my Boiling Lake adventure out with a 1 hour or so drive from Salisbury. Guides waved me down in Laudet. I requested and agreed to the guides wages. My guide and I struck up a instant friendship. Once the hike started Breakfast River came up fast.We only paused there for a drink and moment of appreciation. My guide was very knowledgeable about the trail and often stopped to point out fauna and flora, birds or interesting tidbits. I am also happy to recall his passion for local politics, which I soaked up as I too like my local politics. The trail was strenuous but made far easier by the enjoyable conversation and insight of my guide. I was often in awe of the beautiful and at times surreal surroundings. The hike is far richer then just the amazing Boiling Lake, it must share the spot light with the valley of desolation , hot pools to soak in, birds, views and the Titou Gorge. A...

Trafalgar Falls Suprise!

by iamcan

Trafalgar falls is high on the list of tourist attractions and is a popular cruiseship tour. The twin falls (Mamma and Papa) are sure to please nature and photo buffs. I assumed it would be nice but definately tame. Surprise !! With a tour group it is not a long hike but in a few a places it can be challenging. Do it alone and try going up to Papa and it will be a thrill. There is much more to see and do at Trafalgar than the main cruiseship tour. Ask about , if you are fit , taking the short hike up to Papa and/or taking a dip in a hot water pool. A guide would make this easy and memorable. If you are staying on the Island , read about it, spend the extra time to find out all the wonders of this spot. Live a little and swim at the base of Mamma or Papa. Enjoy !

Rosseau...the capital

by BownLovingFreak

Rosseau is such a trip! Coming from a large US city...its cute to think...this is their bustling capital city. Rosseau is a mess of old, Caribean homes mixed with loads of friendly locals, blaring Soca beats, and delicious food everywhere. The main banks are in Rosseau...get your money here! Their is a cool church that you can see from town. Go to the coast and view the Morne Trois Pitons are in the back. Towering green mountains in perfect view from the cities port! Terrific photo opps! Beware...the cruise ship comes in here and all the markets and shops near them are a bit cheesy and expensive. People are super nice, but beware of a few beggers and weirdos (not too many though). By the way, its pronounced..Rose-Oh. Great place to view locals and get a Kubuli beer!

The Boiling Lake

by BownLovingFreak

If you go to Dominica, you have to visit the Boiling Lake. This lake is the second largest boiling lake in the World...or the largest in the Western Hemisphere (the biggest is in New Zealand). I went with a LARGE group...which is unusual. Normally, you hire a guide and transport to the start of the trail. Normally groups are small...ranging from 2-10. I went with a group from a university. Wasn't to pleased with our particular guides. They went at their pace and finished before all of us. They aren't used to bringing so many people though. The hike itself is tough. I am fairly active and struggled a bit with the stairs. You have to climb over 3 mountains and cross a few rivers. Do not expect to keep your shoes dry or clean. It often rains and can get a bit cold. Bring a rain jacket and good walking shoes that you don't mind getting filthy. The walk is very fun though. Beautiful scenery....

Scuba diving and cliff jumping

by youngdoc

Everyone seems to mention the waterfalls....well yes i must admit the waterfalls here are simply spectacular (each one in their own way). My personal favorite is actually Emerald pool, a rather small waterfall, but in a beautiful setting. (I'll upload a pic shortly) But anywho, as 'things to do', no one should come to Dominica without Scuba diving at Scott's Head, the southern-most peak of the Island. For those of you more adventurous ones, there are great cliff diving spots right smack in the middle of the rainforests, my favorite one being Chaudiere Pool. It's a nice little 20-footer. It's on the north side of the island, so if coming from Melville Hall airport, and arriving early, definitlely try and make it there before you hurry south to the capiral of Roseau.(If you ask me Roseau is just a visitor town built for the incoming cruise ships, not really anything to do there, except get...

Hiking to Middleham Falls

by szumlanski

One thing everyone forgets to tell you is that you can go swimming in the pool below the falls. Granted, it is very cold, but once you're in you get are so exhilarated that you forget it. Swim across the pool, and when you get to the other side, climb up into the cave (wear aqua shoes) and enjoy the scenery and spray!

When at Syndicate.. go to Milton Falls!

by delphis

Syndicate Estate in the north of the island is a magnet for those interested in seeing Dominica's unique Sisserou Parrot.Often overlooked though is a great little waterfall not far off the road on the way to Syndicate: Milton Falls. Get your tour guide to take you - it's a pleasant, short walk from the trail and well worth it.

Hot Waterfall Slides!!!

by PrunedInWA

Imagine a waterfall in all of it's glory. You see locals diving into pools at various landings from 25 feet in the air. Lush greenery all around, you decide to go for a swim and oh my....someone's heated this baby up! It's like a hot tub! You see a few people sit at the edge of the pool and then disappear. So, you follow. Trafalgar Falls is a hot water waterslide. Well, quite a few actually. The slides are small and short, nothing daunting. They are great fun because they're slippery not too many sharp edges. Naturally. I'm talking some kind of local red clay. The staining kind. In other words, don't wear a white swimsuit. This is the place you'll talk about the rest of your life! I am!One more word of caution, however. Your clothes should be fine to leave while you play, but keep your valuables in a waterproof bag on your person. I had an inexpensive "NY" watch stolen from in between all...

The spectacular twin falls of Trafalgar

by dlytle

The first major stop on our tour was to the Trafalgar Falls. To get there we had to drive into the highlands where we saw the tropical growth of the island first hand. The sun, clouds and high volcanic mountains make Dominica what it is, the lushest island in the Caribbean. Dominica is a verdantly green, rugged, mountainous land where man has really not encroached. Every few miles we would cross one of their rivers -one for every day of the year, the Dominicans say - that coursed through a luxuriant landscape. But what we had come to see were the waterfalls. And waterfalls there are! They cascade in spumes and torrents, filling the air with the sound of arcing water. Often showcased by the deep green of the tropical vegetation but also occasionally by the red-orange flamboyant trees flaring on the vivid green hillsides. What makes all of this possible is Morne Diablotin, more than 4,700...
