Favorite thing: Besides comfortable shoes and clothing and a water bottle (or 2), a good map of the Old Town is good to have if you want to know where you walked by or information in general. A good one can be found at Colonial Zone. They have a printable version and the one on the link, where you can click on the numbers to find out about the places.
Favorite thing:
This is where the rest of the founding fathers are located: Juan Pablo Duarte, Francisco del Rosario Sanchez, and Ramon Matias Mella.
There are like the George Washingon, Lincoln, and Jefferson of the Dominican Republic.
It is located near "El Conde" , also near "El Malecon".
Favorite thing:
"La Catedral Primada de America" as it is called in Spanish, was built in the early 16th century. This is where the first mass in the New World was made.
It is in very good shape and it's very beautiful on the inside as well.
Favorite thing: If you are interested in the history of Santo Domingo, make sure you visit "La Zona Colonial" It has many monuments that are more than 500 years old. There are tour guides that can help you and entrance fees are either free or extremely cheap.
Favorite thing:
In Santo Domingo the historical center, La Zona Colonial, is a well preserved place and is considered Human Heritage by UNESCO. Here there are about 300 historical buildings, among which the first cathedral built in the New World and the first street, Calle de Las Damas.
Fondest memory:
Some streets of the Colonial Zone are closed to traffic. Walking down Calle de Las Damas you can feel the atmosphere of the old days. I could imagine to meet a Spanish nobleman and his lady coming out from a main door.
Favorite thing:
Spend time in Zona Colonial, the architecture is beautiful. I also recommend renting a car and taking a road trip for a couple of days. DR is an amazing country with many beautiful sights. Get out and off the beaten path!
Fondest memory:
The students at UNPHU university once again proved to me that the best way to learn about a country is to befriend locals and let them do the rest. You will be amazed at the friends you will make and the great things you can learn fron each other. I am already a much better cook, thanks girls!
