Street vendors (food): Real life 1
  • Tip Rating:
  • I found the "Mercado Modelo" in Calle Mella (Santo Domingo) really disappointing, a real tourist trap. You will find the same items elsewhere, without the hassle of the vendors and without so many pickpoketers around... BUT, the streets around were really interesting. Just a couple of blocks away and not a single tourist in sight, nobody bothers you, and plenty of "real life" small shops, street vendors, etc. I loved specially the colourful food stalls. No idea of what most of these fruits and spices are, but looked (and smelled) beautiful!

I assume there should be some good record stores in SD, but we did not see any. However, music was everywhere, as well as CD street vendors (illegal copies of course, but nobody seemed to worry about).

For those who are interested. How do these compare with the Cuban version? I wouldn't know...

    Not that expensive
It is actually my favorite shop in Santo Domingo. Very well kept and neatly organized.

Local crafts in general, but watch out for well done souvenirs, Taino Gods, pottery and t-shirts.

I paid like 8 dlls. for a Taino God and 5 for a nice box.

Shops along the El Conde Street
When you walk along the El Conde street, you will find a large variety of shops. There are many locals shopping as well, so I assume it is not only for tourists. We found most of our souvenirs there, but also some other things that we wanted to buy.

    Acropolis: Malls in Santo Domingo
One of the corners of the Mall - Santo Domingo
One of the corners of the Mall

Acropolis is one of the malls in the city of Santo Domingo. I went there to explore what it was and the experience was faboulous. I could find some brands that I already knew like Mango, Puma, Zara, United Colors of Benneton, and others. I did enjoy the little gift places in the middle of the mall with hats, jewerly, candy, candles and even a store called 'CCC" where I found CD's that I was in need to save my pictures. The good thing about this mall is crowded at night with locals because they have bars, coffee shops and restaurants in this mall... and also the popularity of the Movie theather. The building is big and Delta Airlines office and Scotia Bank branch is in here, too.

It will depend what you are looking for.

    La Sirena: Supermarket/Mall
La Sirena is a huge supermarket/mall where you can buy anything: Grocery, clothes, sports articles, books etc. You can also buy your souvenirs here and at a cheaper price than a tourist shop. There are a couple of La Sirena’s in Santo Domingo, but I have only visited the one at Ave. Winston Churchill.

Mangobajito.com t-shirts: looking for an authentic Dominican souvenir?
I bought a t-shirt with this design - Santo Domingo

Mangobajito.com is a young new business selling t-shirts with Dominican slogans. The shirts are made in DR and come in women's and men's sizes. The material of the shirts is of good quality. Now, the slogans might be confusing for those who can't speak Spanish (and even for those who do) because they're very Dominican. Nevertheless, once you are explained what your design means, it guarantees at least a chuckle...or a good conversation starter. For example, I bought a t-shirt with "Low Romo" (see the picture). Romo is a Dominican slang for rum, and it means that I should replenish my rum consumption ;) They deliver the shirts within Santo Domingo and some Dominican provinces. If you're not sure of the size, let them know so when you buy them and they'll send you a smaller and a bigger one so you can try them on and keep the one that fits you the best. If you choose this way of shopping, you pay in cash to the messenger who delivers you the shirts. You can, of course, visit them at their kiosks at Acrópolis Center mall and Megacentro mall.

    T-shirts.

The prices are on their site, but I think you can haggle if you buy several.

Megacentro mall: all you want to find under one roof
Megacentro is a mall with everything you can imagine under it: beauty parlors for men and women, a movie theater with 10 rooms, clothes shops, make up shops, jewelry, souvenirs, a pool place, banks, a supermarket, a Disney like park for the kids and plenty of options to eat and satisfy everyone's taste.

    Clothes, food, jewelry, souvenirs...

    What they ask for.

Mi tierra Dominican products festival: great for buying Dominican products
February is the month of our mother land (el mes de la patria) and this is particularly celebrated at all the Multicentro La Sirena shops by having a festival during all of February where they sell Dominican products at excellent prices. This year they have an artisan making products in clay in store.
