Old Town: Larimar Museum & Amber World Museum
  • Tip Rating:
  • Amber is a vegetable fossil resin that when hardened becomes a semi precious gem used in jewelry. The range of its colors go from pale yellowish to bright red, and more rarely green and blue. It differentiates from Baltic amber in the tree where they're originated from. Larimar is a variety of pectolite rock, blue/turquoise, that's only found in DR. It's mined in Barahona and it's also used for making jewelry. It was discovered by a local named Miguel Méndez and the Peace Corps volunteer Norman Rilling. The name Larimar comes from Méndez' daughter's name, Larissa, and the Spanish word for sea, mar. Practical info: Larimar Museum: Calle Isabel la Católica, close to the Ozama Fortress and the Cathedral. Amber World Museum: Arzobispo Meriño esq. Restauración. These 2 museums are places to buy good quality amber and larimar.

Take a stroll on Calle El Conde
  • Tip Rating:
  • Calle El Conde is a pedestrian street starting on Parque Colón and goes all the way until El Conde gate. This street is full of shops, places to eat, internet cafés, street booths that sell souvenirs, CD's, fruit, etc. If you buy souvenirs from the street vendors, be aware that their prices are higher than the ones at the souvenir shops. In all of the shops (with the exception of the jewelries) and booths it's OK to haggle, especially if you're buying a lot of articles.

    Old Town: Panteón Nacional (Pantheon)
  • Tip Rating:
  • Originally a Jesuit church, this is the final home of important Dominican figures including most of the patriots that fought to make the DR independent from foreign mandates. In the middle of the pantheon there's a flame that never extinguishes, like an eternal candle lit on for these souls who rest in peace. Don't miss the change of guard. Practical info: open daily 9am-4:30pm. It does NOT cost anything to enter, contrary to what anyone can say. Dress appropriately.

  • Address: Calle Las Damas
  • Directions: Zona Colonial, almost corner with Calle Las Mercedes.

Take a stroll on Boulevard 27 de Febrero
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Boulevard, as it is known among us, is a traffic island in the middle of Avenida 27 de Febrero, between Av. Lincoln and Av. Churchill. They have sculptures, a "tower" inspired by the Eiffel tower with a clock and some places where you can buy beer, soft drinks and snacks. When it opened it used to hold some shows, promotions, even a fashion show once. The place has benches and trees with flowers that blossom all year round. A true oasis among traffic chaos.

  • Address: Avenida 27 de Febrero
  • Directions: Between Abraham Lincoln and Winston Churchill avenues. Walking distance from Plaza Lama and Plaza Central mall.

    Parque Colon
  • Tip Rating:
  • On the photo you can see the ancient Cathedral of Santo Domingo in which the Great Admiral is burried. There is also a monument of Columbus who is pointing northward and a native Taino is climbing up to reach him. In this pose the Discoverer points the way to new discoveries and symbolizes the era in which Santo Domingo, the historic name of this island, was the capital of the Spanish Empire.

    Faro a Colon
  • Tip Rating:
  • The lighthouse is an impressibe cross-shaped structure constructed for the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas in 1492. In the heart of the structure is a chapel containing the Columbus tomb, and, some say, his mortal remains (other locations, including the Cathedral of Seville, also claim to possess the explorer's remains.) At night, you can see the lighthouse from the colonial city, the powerful lights reflect a cross into the sky.

    UASD
  • Tip Rating:
  • UNIVERSIDAD AUTONOMA DE SANTO DOMINGO The University of Saint Tomás of Aquino, today Autonomous University of Santo Domingo, was founded under the reign of Carlos I of Spain and V of Germany by the Bula in Apostolatus Culminate. Its shield, in the fourth upper left symbolizes the Imperial Eagle bicéfala of the Hapsburg family. In the fourth upper right the Professorship is found of Saint Tomás of Aquino, disciple of Saint Domingo of Guzmán, founder of the Order of the Dominicos. In the two lower rooms a greyhound appears maintaining a thea among its teeth that sets on fire the Earth Globe, with what symbolizes the vehement oratory of the Order of the Preachers. It tells the tradition that when the mother of Saint Domingo of Guzmán carried him its womb, she had a vision in which a dog appeared setting on fire the land. It is because of it, that when Saint Domingo founded the Order of the Preachers to fight the heresies of the albicenses, its members were called "Dominicanis", that means "Dog of the Lord". On the greyhound there are two branches of laurel and of palm intercross, that represent the triumph of the Order of the Preachers. On these, a star symbolizing a marks of birth that had Saint Domingo in the forehead. All these symbols are framed by the inscription: "Academy of Saint Tomás of Aquino in the Imperial Convent of the Island Hispaniola".
