adjoining the park at the end of El Conde is the Catedral Santa Maria de la Encarnacion church. Walk amongst its grounds and take in the architecture of the 16th century. stain glassed windows and stonework is work looking at also. I've also since read there is a dress code in place; no shorts or short skirts and no pants for females.

    Jardín Botánico (Botanical Garden)
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Botanical Garden has been a must for nature lovers and everyone who wants to have peace within chaos in the city since its opening in 1976 during the government of Dr. Joaquín Balaguer. It houses one of the biggest flower clocks in the world (according to their website), a lovely Japanese garden, a section with native plants of the island of Hispaniola, aquatic plants, orchids, a museum with dissected exemplars of plants and a palm area. Don't miss their Japanese garden with its soft grass and the loveliness of the trees. Here's another place where you can bring your own lunch and picnic (like the Zoo). Because this garden is huge (2 million square meters), a good way to explore here is their guided tour by train. If you don't speak Spanish say so, so that they can do the guiding in English - like Mr. Sweden experienced :) Practical info: open daily 8am-4pm all year round. The fees are as following: - Entrance: 20 pesos for Dominicans (adults), 60 pesos for foreigners - Train fare: 20 pesos for Dominicans, 40 pesos for foreigners. They have a package including the entrance, the train and the museums fees but since we didn't take it I forgot what it costs. All fees are clearly published on the entrance, by the ticket booth, just look for the word "extranjeros".

  • Directions: From Churchill avenue: take a northbound OMSA bus (Corredor Los Ríos) on Churchill Avenue and ask the "cobrador" (the person at the back collecting the fare just before you get out) to drop you off at the entrance of the garden.

    Faro a Colón (Columbus' Lighthouse)
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Columbus' Lighthouse was built to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the discovering of America. It's shaped into a big cross with the smaller parts in front and on the sides, and the longest part on the back. It houses the remains of Columbus (this is being disputed between Spain and us), and at night its lights are shaped in a cross that can be seen from, for.ex. the Old Town. The construction of this monument was controversial because a wall was built to "separate the poor barrios" from the monument itself. This wall is called "El muro de la vergüenza" (the wall of shame). I went to high school at a public school (a good one too) that's located walking distance from the Lighthouse and that wall made it somewhat difficult for us to get into the premises - which is why I don't like it (together with many capitaleños [habitants from Santo Domingo]). I haven't been inside yet tho. From my childhood's house I can see the cross light.

    Fortaleza Ozama
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is called after Rio Ozama, not Bin Laden :) The original fortress was built in 1502, and has since been significantly enlarged. The central keep, the Torre de Homenaje offers great views of the city and the sea, and you can also see the hole through which prisoners were dropped into their cells. This is a great place to see if you like history; once inside, you will not be able to avoid imagining being a conquistador in the XVI century fighting against English pirates. From the top, you get a great view of old city and the sea. A large section of the original wall is still standing. However, the outer wall was actually built in the XX century by dictator Trujillo who used the site as a political prison.

    National Aquarium
  • Tip Rating:
  • When visiting the lighthouse, you can stop at the aquarium. Its main attraction is a huge fish tank with a tunnel passing through it. Anecdote : three different entry prices are indicated : a cheaper price for children, a special price for Dominicans and a higher price for tourists ;-)

    CALLE DEL CONDE
  • Tip Rating:
  • OK This is the famous Calle Del Conde, it's a very well known shopping strip in the capital, close to the Colonial Zone, and many other tourists attractions, this shopping strip is not meant for tourists but for the locals, so you have a very good chance of getting some good deals on an extended selection of items.

    THE AQUARIUM
  • Tip Rating:
  • OK The National Aquarium opened its doors in 1990 with modern facilities and an open design in front of the Caribbean Sea beautiful waters. It displays in an almost natural environment over 3,000 living sea animals of more than 250 different species in 90 fish tanks without requiring any artificial controls. The water in the tanks flows directly from the Caribbean Sea a few meters from the Aquarium. It is not only an interesting and complete showcase of marine life in the country and around the world, but also an important center of marine biology research and it provides as well rescue services and treatment for stranded animals. The National Aquarium is a very exciting place to visit, there you'll see a very extended exhibition of tropical and native fishes, also it's very hands on and practical unlike other aquariums in other places in the world. So pick a towel and come down there!

    GOT TO GET HERE !!!
  • Tip Rating:
  • OK. FOLKS! Places that you should not miss if ever visiting the Dominican Republic: #1- ZONA COLONIAL(Colonial Zone): This is a zone that encompasses about some 8 square blocks, of houses, buildings and edifications dating back to the establishment of the spanish colony in the new world (1492) and it's still in actual livable conditions, unlike the rest of the latin-american long gone cultures. #2- ALCAZAR DE COLON: This is the main house of conqueror Alt. Cristobal Colon and later the residency of his brother Gov. Don Diego Colon, you should make early preparations to visit there, since visiting hours change regulary. #3- JARDIN BOTANICO MOSCOSO PUELLO: This is by far the biggest and most varied botanical garden in all latin-america, among some of it's most beautiful exhibits is the Japanese Gardens, you should take a day or two to explore some of it's grounds, it's very extensive! #4- Follows o the next tip:

    Columbus Lighthouse
  • Tip Rating:
  • This contraversial monument to Columbus cost $150 million USD to construct and was completed in 1992 to honor the 400th year anniversary of Columbus landing. It supposedly contains the remains of Christopher Columbus however at least 2 other places claim to have his remains.
