Snorkeling at Catalina Island, La Romana

    Snorkelling off Catalina

We a took a day trip by bus to Catalina Island on the Caribbean coast by La Romana. The trip was primarily for scuba divers and organized by Scuba Caribe, but a few of us tagged along to snorkel ( I had a cold and couldn't scuba). The trip started at 7 in the morning from our hotel and took about 2 hours to get to La Romana, including half and hour picking up guests from other hotels in Punta Cana. A boat then took us all to the first dive site, "The Wall", which is a 90 foot drop, seemed pretty nifty for the divers. The snorkeling was okay, some fish, water nice and warm and clear. The boat then dropped the snorkelers off at the beach on Catalina for a barbecue lunch and tooks the divers to another dive called "The Aquarium." We snorkeled off the beach at Catalina, which was actually much more fun than at the wall - lots of closer reef and more interesting fish. The divers came to the beach later and had lunch too. Unfortunately we lost one of our underwater cameras so don't have any pics of these dives. I would recommend the Scuba Caribe trip for scuba divers but for snorkelers I have to honestly say that we would have been better off booking with the hotel tour which went straight to the beach: the snorkeling was better there and the hotel tour had a much better lunch, which included grilled lobster! They were right next to us on the beach and it was torture while we ate our pork chops!

    Several activities
  • Tip Rating:
  • At the resort you may find varied sports infrastructures, such as a golf green, tennis courts or non-motorized water sports (Kayaking, windsurfing). Also available, is the chance to dive, as usually resorts have a diving school that not only teach people to dive but also organize daytrips to nice locations to dive.

    Scuba diving in Punta Cana
  • Tip Rating:
  • Mark completed his PADI Open Water certification while in Punta Cana through a referral with Scuba Caribe, an outfit located in many places including right on the property of the Riu hotels. It was very convenient as we only had to go to the Scuba Caribe office on the beach and walk straight down to the water with our equipment, where a boat was waiting.

We brought our own masks, snorkel and fins for comfort but all equipment was included in the price. The wet suits and BCD units were in excellent condition.

This is not one the activities included in your All-Inclusive vacation, but it certainly will be available to you. Be sure to do your homework, and check around for prices, times etc. Also, don't be shy about asking others who are just returning for their half-day out. The excursions can be quite pricey, and you want to make sure you get your money's worth. Somebody sure did in this photo!

Check at the watersports desk at your resort. They will probably have some sort of sailboat or catamarans, like these Hobie Cats. You can usually take them out for an hour, as long as you have basic knowledge of how to sail. They may make you take a crash course first, for their comfort.

    Open Water
  • Tip Rating:
  • By the time we went scuba diving near the end of our trip, the waves had become stronger, so the visibility was not great and the descent rather turbulent. Nonetheless there were interesting fish and coral to be seen.

Did you see the episode of the PGA Cap Cana Golf Tournement? Well, that was in Cap Cana, Punta Cana. Punta Cana is the newest modern golf destination in the Caribbean. There are several beautiful golf courses from world famous designers like Pete Dye, Jack Niclaus and Nick Price in the resorts in and around Punta Cana.

On the golf courses they will rent you material. Ofcourse you can bring your own clubs. You can leave your clubs at the clubhouse of the course if you like.

    Golfing
People have said they liked this golf course better than Teeth Of The Dog

We brought our clubs with us, it doesn't cost any extra - you are allowed one piece of sports equipment each person on your flights and that includes your set of clubs and everything. Worth it!
