Transport from Santo Domingo is a breeze with the Bavaro Express Company. The busses are new and comfortable providing Latin version of American action movies and detached views of DR countryside. The bus has its original stop somewhere west of the old town but it has another one sort of north-east which might end up closer to your hotel if your lodging is in the historic center. In this case it is useful to do your homework and investigate the right locations and the latest departure times since the info on their internet page might not be exactly up to date. Otherwise the prospects are a long wait at a gloomy bus terminal or cowboy style bus chase through the city (not that bad of an option if the ending is happy). The customers of the Four Points Sheraton Hotel can ask for a stop at the hotel itself since it is located right at the highway.
I was in Dominican Rep. as a backpacker so i was looking for the cheapest way to travel between the cities. When i walked out of the Punta Cana airport, i stood on the right hand side of the main road going from Punta Cana to Higuey. After 15 mins standing under the tropical sun, i waved at a bus and it stopped. I confirmed if it was a cheap bus which is called 'Gua-gua'. I took this Guagua from outside Punta Cana airport to Higuey and it was 50 pesos (Domincan currency). It took around 45 mins and it was 43 Kms but as it was a guagua it stopped so many times at every village on the way.
