    Hen fighting is allowed in the Dominican Republic and is very popular. Men come to gamble and drink. A lot of money goes around in the hen fight gambling circuit. Hens do not necessary fight to dead. After ten fights, a hen will be retired as he will loose its agressivity.

    Every day, you can visit the local market in Higuey. Local people can rent a space to sell their goods for about 30RD per day. You will see the local fruits and the results of the poeltry. As no fridges are available on these markets, special digesting systems will be required when eating the purchased goods.
    That's why most immigrants will go to the airconditioned supermarket in stead of this open air market

    The Basilica was inaugurated in 1971 and consecrated as a Cathedral on August 15, 1972 by Archbishop Antonio Beras Rojas.

    The building was designed by a French architect.

    You will need to wear clothes that cover your shoulders and knees in order to be allowed access to the cathedral.

    When entering the cathedral, you will walk up to the painting of madonna, where you can ask your whishes to come true. Be patient, as most dominicans will have a huge list of demands to the madonna.

    The cathedral is built on the place where an orange tree was located. Three children had seen Mother Maria appearing there. They found a painting of madonna under this tree, took it home and the next day, the painting was not in their homa anymore, but back under the tree. The painting is now built in in the cathedral.

    In the mountains of Altagracia, you will find some planters that have a very unstructured plantage. They have all kind of local fruits in their culture. Some of them sell the products of their land. It's an opportunity if you can visit.

    If you visit them during rain season, you will see a very green environment and in the mountains you'll sure have a shower while visiting :-)
