The dirt road was washed away in torrential rains by saccharinicity There are a few options to getting to La Romana. One is to fly into Punta Cana and get a transfer from the airport. This involves a long bus ride through the mountains on treacherous dirt roads for approximately 2 hours. The other is to fly into La Romana. If you have to option of flying straight into La Romana I highly suggest it, unless of course you want an experience you won't forget! The roads between the two cities are really in shambles, dirt roads through mountainous areas with potholes bigger than your car. Most of the time can be spend trying to navigate around these areas. Also, if you go in the rainy season, I would not suggest driving these roads. I was caught in a storm and the entire road was washed away in a sinkhole. It was nighttime and we wouldn't have even known except for a few locals waving us down in the torrential rains to warn us. We had to turn around and find another way back. Hours were tacked onto the drive. It can be dangerous, especially in the rain, on those mountain dirt roads. Be prepared. Leave a Comment Theme: Airplane

Moto Concho by mabu The fastest and cheapest, but not the safest way to get around la romana are moto conchos. Moto conchos are motorbikes driving around wich will take you with them. You pay them depending on the distance, for local rides something between RD$ 10.- and 20.- don't allway accept the first price they tell you, they like to ask a too high price. I mentioned the safety before. Moto conchos are often involved in accidents. they are no crash helmets and you often see up to 4 people on one motorbike. So before you go on a Moto concho look at the bike and the driver. look that the bike is in good conditon and the driver looks expierienced. Don't forget to wear sunglasses, there are lots of insects and other bits of dirt etc. wich can get in you eyes. Leave a Comment Theme: Motorcycle

Dominican Railway by mabu Sorry to all railway fans, the dominican railway isn't used for passenger transport... The railway transports the sugarcane from the fields around La Romana to the sugar (and rum) factory. The trains are loaded very high, and are very long, and so an interesting sight, even for non-railway-fans! I didn't have my camera ready as a loaded train came, so here a picture of an engine instead. Leave a Comment Theme: Train

The best way around the area is the local bus, it is the least expensive way to travel the music is good and sometimes some interesting people and things on the bus. If your really adventurous, you can ride on a motorcycle taxi. Leave a Comment Theme: Motorcycle

by mmurie We went to La Romana by bus from Higüey. The service is regular, about a bus every hour. By motoconcho! A kind of taxi-moto. Such an experience! and the cheapest! Leave a Comment Theme: Motorcycle

The traffic by Joan58 We went to La Romana by taxi which are waiting at the entrance of the resorts (agree on the price before leaving). So we could go wherever we want for about two hours. In La Romana you can take buses that reach Bayahibe, Higuey or Santo Domingo. You'll also go round the city by motorcycle. The 'motoconchos' are waiting near the Parque Duarte. The drivers will call you inviting for a ride. You'll can see three people who are riding on a motoconcho!!...and without crash helmet!! Leave a Comment Theme: Motorcycle

Spices on La Romana Market by mabu In La Romana there is a market, a real musst see. On the Market you can buy all different kind of things, fruit, vegetables, spices, meat, cloathes and much more. The Market is very colorfull and loaded with more or less nice smells. There is absolutly no problem just wandering around and looking at the different stalls without buying anything. We weren't bothered with penetrant sellers, a simple "no gracias" would do to stop them trying. Leave a Comment Directions: Well, here it get's difficult ;-) The Guagua from Bayahibe stiops near the market so we didn't have to search. But you can ask any local who will show you.

One of the Churches by mabu La Romana is somehow a very confusing town. Streets go everywhere, people, cars and motorbikes are everywhere but no street looks alike. On the way to a shop we lost track of the streets and landed somewhere totaly different as planned... There are thousands of little shops, lots of churches and colourfull houses to be seen. One landmark helps you orientate: The chimneys of the sugar factory spitting out lots of smoke. In some places you could smell the sweet sugary smoke. Leave a Comment

in the cigar factory by mabu In La Romana there are two cigar factorys. One is somewhere in the town, the other near the harbour. We tried to visit the bigger one at the harbour first but couldn't. They only do tours if it's organised before. Then we tryed the second one. This factory is only very small but you can look at it. The cigars are rolled by hand. If you want you can buy some cigars after the visit (but you need to ask to, they don't ask you!!!). The visit was quite fascinating, one of the employees welcomed us with a cigar (my first cigar ever..) and showed us around. Then we could wander around and look over the shoulders of the working people. It was no problem to take pictures. You can see some in the cigar t-logue on this page Tha factory is open until 16.30. . Leave a Comment Directions: The factory is somewhere in the top bit of the town. We took a moto concho (see transport tip) to get there, probably the only way to find it...

Go on the outback safari, you spend the day going into the countryside. There are many things to see from sugarcane fields being harvested to a typical dominican family house we got to visit. There is also a river trip, and a lunch in the country. Horseback riding or in a wagon if you can't ride. It gets you away from the city and the beach which can become boring after a while. Leave a Comment Directions: There is an outback safari in the north, south and east coasts, so nomater where you stay you can go on one. They pick you up at your hotel.Other Contact: They have a website www.outbacks
