While vacationing in the DR, a resort member would come around and take professional looking pictures of you alone, or with a parrot of lizard. It didn't cost anything to take them, the guy just takes them, and then you go to the booth later to see if you like them, and then you pay for the ones you want, or you don't have to buy any. If you decide to buy, make sure they charge you a fair amount! They will try and make you pay in US$, and try to pay triple, because it's making them more money. Ask how much the pictures cost in different currencies and you will understand. I called the guy in charge out on it, and he gave me a knowing smile- he knew his little scam, and eventually we worked out a deal.
Unique Suggestions: If you really like the pictures, buy them, but don't be afraid to question the people.
Fun Alternatives: Let the guy on the beach take pictures of you (a fairly lengthy process anyways) and get your friend to take pics with your camera too.

Going to visit La Romana, surely your starting point will be the Parque Duarte. Surely here you'll be accosted by people who'll want to show you round. At least it happened to us. This guy wanted at all costs to be our guide in a town where there is nothing such important to see. We wanted just to go round by ourselves. He was just a little touchy, so at last we had to pay him for DON'T show us round!!

In Boca Chica, watch out for the children wanting to clean and polish your shoes they are very fast and don't ask you, they will even try to wash your sandels. Also the guys in the street who like to get you to there favourite beach bar and then get you to buy them drinks. Then all the vendors come around and try to get you to buy and you can't walk away.

In March 1998 we stayed at the south coast in Bayahibe which we liked better than Puerto Plata on the northcoast.
