Moto Concho
  • Tip Rating:
  • The fastest and cheapest, but not the safest way to get around la romana are moto conchos.

Moto conchos are motorbikes driving around wich will take you with them. You pay them depending on the distance, for local rides something between RD$ 10.- and 20.- don't allway accept the first price they tell you, they like to ask a too high price.

I mentioned the safety before. Moto conchos are often involved in accidents. they are no crash helmets and you often see up to 4 people on one motorbike. So before you go on a Moto concho look at the bike and the driver. look that the bike is in good conditon and the driver looks expierienced.
Don't forget to wear sunglasses, there are lots of insects and other bits of dirt etc. wich can get in you eyes.

    Dominican railway
  • Tip Rating:
  • Sorry to all railway fans, the dominican railway isn't used for passenger transport...

The railway transports the sugarcane from the fields around La Romana to the sugar (and rum) factory. The trains are loaded very high, and are very long, and so an interesting sight, even for non-railway-fans!

I didn't have my camera ready as a loaded train came, so here a picture of an engine instead.

There are a few options to getting to La Romana. One is to fly into Punta Cana and get a transfer from the airport. This involves a long bus ride through the mountains on treacherous dirt roads for approximately 2 hours.

The other is to fly into La Romana. If you have to option of flying straight into La Romana I highly suggest it, unless of course you want an experience you won't forget!

The roads between the two cities are really in shambles, dirt roads through mountainous areas with potholes bigger than your car. Most of the time can be spend trying to navigate around these areas.

Also, if you go in the rainy season, I would not suggest driving these roads. I was caught in a storm and the entire road was washed away in a sinkhole. It was nighttime and we wouldn't have even known except for a few locals waving us down in the torrential rains to warn us. We had to turn around and find another way back. Hours were tacked onto the drive.

It can be dangerous, especially in the rain, on those mountain dirt roads. Be prepared.

    fly into international airport
  • Tip Rating:
  • The best way around the area is the local bus, it is the least expensive way to travel the music is good and sometimes some interesting people and things on the bus. If your really adventurous, you can ride on a motorcycle taxi.

We went to La Romana by bus...
  • Tip Rating:
  • We went to La Romana by bus from Higüey. The service is regular, about a bus every hour.
By motoconcho! A kind of taxi-moto. Such an experience! and the cheapest!

    The motoconchos
We went to La Romana by taxi which are waiting at the entrance of the resorts (agree on the price before leaving). So we could go wherever we want for about two hours. In La Romana you can take buses that reach Bayahibe, Higuey or Santo Domingo. You'll also go round the city by motorcycle. The 'motoconchos' are waiting near the Parque Duarte. The drivers will call you inviting for a ride. You'll can see three people who are riding on a motoconcho!!...and without crash helmet!!
