No matter the route, getting to Constanza will bring you through some of the most amazing landscape you've ever seen. They say Constanza is set amidst the "Dominican Alps," but that's a little grandiose. Nevertheless, the town does lie at 5,000 feet elevation, which makes it much cooler and less humid than the rest of the island. And it sits in the shadow of the Pico Duarte, the highest point in the Caribbean at more than 10,000 feet.

Guidebooks say the route from Jarabacoa directly to Constanza is extraordinarily rough and dangerous. We found that an overstatement. If it's raining, don't try it. But if the road isn't muddy, it isn't that bad. Take the gua-gua ("wa-wa" - a private conveyance of some kind -- truck, car, bus, etc. -- in use all over the Dominican Republic). It's a great trip and a lot of fun. And dirt cheap. (On our recent trip there were 12 of us stuffed into a mini-truck. And then there was our cargo.)

The guaguas from Constanza to La Vega are cheap, but so are the taxis. If you're traveling with a group, get prices for both.
