    Los Siete Hermanos are seven uninhabited islands in the Parque Nacional Monte Cristi. Los Siete Hermanos means the Seven Brothers and the names of the islands are: ’Arenas’, ’Terrero’, ’Monte Grande’, ’Raton’, ’Muertos’, ’Monte Chico’ and ’Tururú’.

    I have visited the islands three times (in 2004, 2006 and 2008) on boat trips with local fishermen from Manzanillo, but I'm pretty sure that you also can take an organized boat trip from Monte Cristi to the islands.

    Great place to fish, swim and snorkel. Some of the islands are absolutely stunning with nice beaches and clear blue water.

    In the area around Manzanillo there are two or three cockfighting arenas. Cockfighting is a long Dominican tradition and still a legal sport in the Dominican Republic. Actually it's a very big business among the Dominicans.

    If you're looking for some real local flavour, you'll definitely find it in a cockfighting arena. Normally there is a big crowd, all betting and cheering on their champion. Before the cockfighting starts, a local policeman collects pistols and other hand weapons from the spectators!

    Cockfighting is a cruel and bloody sport, but this is not a statement for or against it - just a few facts. You must decide if you want to go.

    Ask the locals where you can find a local arena if you want to go.
