Be nice to the people, and do not yell at them. Only yell when they are pulling to hard. Or at the kids who are asking for money.....do not give anything to them. When you give one you will see 15 children coming at you at the next corner. This is also a third world country so if you can miss anything on your last day, give it to the people from the hotel. Do give it to them, do not leave it behind in your hotelroom, if you do that they are not allowed to have it for themselves and have to give it away.

There's not much to know about cultural tips. It is recommended that you learn some spanish before you get there. Not that many people speak English. (If you are in a nice hotel or beach resort, then you shouldn't worry too much about it)

Dancing, drinking goes on all night in the discotecs and usually you have a date with you,( not too appropriate to enter single), unless you're a man or you have a bunch of girls with you together. (that sounds like fun!)

You are sitted in a restaurant and nobody comes to you after ten minutes. Take a look around and when you see a server smile and say Ola. She will understand that your expecting her to come. Life in the Carribean is naturaly slow and everything will be done if God whishes so! You are taking holidays, adopt the beat of the South it will be much more carefull for your heart and everything will be better!
Most of the employees in Dominican Republic have learn at task. Their maners are not the one's of a high class restaurant in Boston! But don't be surprise if they bring you a pop with a straw covered with a part of the envelop, it is the way of doing things in DR.
If you want to experience the Dominican Meals you will be happy to taste a Sancocho or a zarzuela de mariscos. Rice and beans are called 'Abichuela' and you will find 'platanas' everywhere. Don't worry they have hygienic notions and you won't be sick. Avoid salads because somerimes they wash it with local water and your body is not familiar with it. It is one way to catch diahrea, the other being drinking with ice made with local water.

    Shrimp on offer
    by toontown
Along with any number of items available for purchase from vendors on the beach, there were a number of vendors selling food items. Food vendors were understandably less common in areas with a lot of all-inclusive hotels but very prevalent in areas like Sosua Bay. Items such as shrimp, fresh clams, tropical fruit, coconut, nuts, cookies, and empanadas were all available. The interesting custom was that the vendors would feed you the food. We had some delicious shrimp and the vendor peeled each of the shrimp and squeezed lime on each one before handing it over. We had some incredible empanadas and the vendor sat there while I ate and poured hot sauce on as needed. I saw other visitors buy fruit and have it peeled for them. I suppose in north america this would not seem very hygienic but somehow I felt it would have been rude not just to go with the flow there on the beach. But if you're squeemish you should be aware what to expect.

    Holiday weekends
Provincia de Puerto Plata Local Customs
    by Grootpiet
Our weekend trip coincided with a public holiday long weekend in the Dominican Republic.

The beaches were quite packed with locals, and apart from being followed around by small kids, we didn't have too many issues.

Rum, rum and more rum. The Brugal rum factory is a popular destination for tours, and you can buy it everywhere. While you are on a tour of any kind you will undoubtedly be plied with rum. As the tour guide on our Paradise Island tour joked: "We have a wide assortment of drinks: coke, sprite, rum and coke, rum and sprite, or for those who don't like mixed drinks, rum and rum." I'm not a big rum fan but it is actually not bad.

If you're at an all-inclusive there is also a wide assortment of other local spirits available to make whatever tropical highballs your heart desires. Tipping the bartender sometimes at an all-inclusive is officially not necessary, however, it may get you faster service and it will most certainly get you friendlier service.
