For those who know the history of Sosúa and not only the bars and beaches, seeing this tiny synagogue tucked away between hotel bunkers comes as no surprise. As already mentioned in my intro page, jewish refugees, mainly from Germany and Austria, made it out from hell at the beginning of the 40' and were invited by then President and Dictator Rafael Trujillo to settle on DR's North Coast were they soon established a dairy and meat cooperative that grew to become the major furnisher for these products on the North Coast. Many of them later became pioneers of Sosúas infrastructure and tourism business... Most of the original settlers have passed away, their children left Sosúa for the U.S.A. and there are hardly any jewish families left... This synagogue therefore is only used once a month on a Friday evening.... ( if ever... from the adjoining pool area of a faceless bunker hotel came, also on Friday evenings, loud music and peoples screams and an animators ghastly stupid jokes yelled at full volume into a microfone.....)
I had a long in depth look at the Sosúa Jewish Museum which tells you all the details about how Sosúa came to exist in the first place and the names of the people who did their share..... Very recommendable...

The synagogue as it was built around 1941 Don't miss the museum.....

I just returned from sousa and all i can say is yikessss. If you go stay at a secrue resort with everything there . Don't try to save money andd get cheap accomidations. Most people there will harrase you . people there are like used cars salesman trying to sell you crap. The nightlife is fun but becareful cause the chicas will rob you blind. Everyone in sousa has an anhge there. The food is ok but overpricd at someplaces like bailey's what a joke, you can get twice the plate for the same price here in the states. and becareful of the strreet pimps man they are non
stop. Don't go there if you have a family and kids no honeymooners. if you want my oppinion stay away

    ~ Beautiful Sandy Beaches ~

    by Heavens-Mirror Written May 6, 2007

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Dominican Republic is an excellent value for money destination. Its not one of the best Caribbean islands but it still has a authentic Caribbean feel to it. You will find the Dominican Republic is always cheaper to travel to than other Caribbean islands such as Mexico, Jamaica, Cuba, Barbados and more.

But if your wanting a good value holiday with fantastic sandy beaches than i would still recommend it. Admittedly i did prefer the beach in Mexico and Jamaica but i still think the Dominican Republic has a beautiful beach. The beach on the North side is known to be colder as its the Atlantic Ocean where as the South side is the Caribbean Sea. Also the sea in the North can be rough at times with the strong currents so always look out for the warning flags before going in the sea.

If you get tired of your hotel, the beach, the vendors, the holiday routine, you might want to go on a Sosua Photo Safari like I did....
Don't expect Jaguars, Alligators or Macaws in and around Sosua but nevertheless, the fauna is still remarkable..... Nowhere else in the Carribean will you find such an astonishingly beautiful paid fashion model bull (ox ? cow ?) as in the higher Sosua regions..... ( pic 1 )...
Going up the hills of Sosua you will find a real paradise for cattle and cattle watchers..... (pic 2 ) and you can even catch a close up face to face with a real Holstein cow to observe their heavenly beautiful eyes..... ( pic 3 ) ...
On lower grounds ( pic 4 ) you can , if you're very lucky, come close to a Sosua Wild Street Raider, a special wolflike breed of dogs with glowing eyes.....
And last but not least an extroverted cock, full of joy for life and music, that loves to belt out arias from italian operas.....
Now, that's worth a break from Carribean sun, ocean and the usual holiday routine like roasting in the sun.......
    Try it out......
