Do not drive in POP

by madmary71

If exploring Puerto Plata (POP) on your own, please do take a taxi. Do not drive around on your own 'coz Dominicans are crazy drivers! (just like Filipinos) They do not follow lane rules, they even drive on the opposing direction just to overtake another vehicle in front of them. I was screaming for my life! The taxi driver was enjoying my terror of course! The good news about taxis, if you find your driver to be reliant and who does not overcharge you, take his cell phone#, and you can call him anywhere you are. You should be able to speak a bit Spanish or someone should.

Friendly cabbie - Jose

by Hermanater

One day we wanted to go to Puerto Plata to look around. One of the workers at the hotel told us to expect about $25 US. We would have to fend for ourselves after we were dropped off. Not an attractive scenario. He said that if we take the 1/2 day tour it is $30. We decided to. It was well worth it. We saved money plus we got to see the sights without worrying about trying to find a taxi at each stop. Jose was our cabbie's name. He has 3 small kids at home. His knowledge of the English language was limited and my Spanish is very limited. We had a great time. I think I learnt more from him in the 2 trips we used him, then the rest of the time.See both pictures for his business card. Great guy.

motoconcho the way to go

by skatzcatz

there is no better way to get around Puerta Plata and for that matter all Dominican towns. For a very small cost yu hop on the back of a motobike and zip around the streets with the wind rushing through your hair. They also hold two passengers and you can even use your unbrella if it rains.Or like me, hold out your arms and pretend to fly.

Taxi's from the airport

by Grootpiet

Fixed taxi rates are listed on a big sign just outside the airport terminal. Return rates are also shown, and should be about a $10 or more discount vs. seperate bookings.Single from the airport to Cofresi beach was about $25, and return $40 excluding tip.Watch out for the guys who try and show you where the taxi's are, they also expect some money.

Driving

by Grootpiet

Didn't do it myself, but driving looked like a bit of a dangerous exercise for the uninitiated... Lots of hooting, pothole-dodging and creating 3 lanes where previously there was 2.I have a lot of respect for the intricate patterns of chaotic driving, but this was supposed to be a restful weekend for us.

by marylou11

I always get 5 estimates from travel agencies with the exact time and place I want to stay. I go with the cheapest. Never had a problem. Why pay more if you don't have to. I met one couple who paid 2000.00 for one week. We paid 1350.00 for two weeks!!! shop around. The more estimates the better.Use the bus the locals use is cheap and fast. They drive crazy so don't be scared.

Getting there is a long swim...

by Umfufu

Getting there is a long swim over the ocean from Holland to the Dominican Republic.....unless you take a plain. With a cab you can go everywhere. Make a price before you go and thats for the whole day. There are signs wich are telling you the price of a trip with a cab. That for real, you can not talk about this price and make it less. The cabs are not that good, but hee the prices are not that bad either. And remember you will also have a guide (when you have a cabdriver that speaks a little english)

If you don't want to rent a car you have the choice to travel aroud Puerto Plata, Sosua and Cabarete by (publicos) small van that you can stop anywhere or moto-conchos to ride at the back of a moto. These travel ways are not expansive and let you meet with dominicans abroad.Since there is only one main road all along the sea you cannot miss anything and you just ask the driver where you want to go ther will be a NO PROBLEMA answer.

Easiest way to get there by plane is landing by the Puerto Plata Airport (Instead of the Santo Domingo Airport of Las Americas). If you need transportation getting in and out of hotels, restaurants or beaches, I suggest you book tourist buses before hand.
