Don't run a bar tab outside of the resorts!

by allenk_007

Although the Dominican Republic offers some beautiful resorts and beaches, and some nice people, the island also has more than its fair share of poverty and some folks (too many unfortunately) who have less than honorable intentions. In a downtown Puerto Plata bar & grill, they asked if I wanted to run a tab. I did, only to find out my credit card was used to buy for the house or so it seemed, and OFTEN. I asked to see the manager, the police were called... it was "pay or go to jail". Were the cops in cahoots? Seems so. Then, to top it off, I was "escorted" to the ATM where I was forced to take out the max daily withdrawal for my "escorts".Enjoy the island, but if you go off the resorts, be very careful and don't go alone!

WATCH YOUR KIDS !!!

by Hermanater

This is something that makes me sick. This is not a place specific concern. While at the pool I notice a little girl about 2 ? 3 yrs old. She had water wings on and was in water over 5 feet deep. There was absolutely nobody watching her. I stayed within a couple feet of her while with my son. After 30 minutes (I thought her parents would come back) I asked her if her mother was around. The girl said yes and quickly left to run to her mother. (I was a stranger so she ran away). I noticed who her parents were.My dilemma was this; do I make an attempt to tune her parents into reality??? Or do I turn a blind eye and pray nothing happens ??? I know that if something happened to her, I would feel guilty.I decided that I would keep an eye out for her. The next day, she was left alone in deep water for over 1 hour while her dad was at the other end of the pool reading a magazine. He looked for...

The only warning I'm gone give...

by Franberu

The only warning I'm gone give you are applying everywhere in the world. Dress without rich appearance leave your jewels at home. Be sober and friendly and stay out of the places where prostitution and criminality are the rules. Stay with the common poeple.I have read some purpose about your arrival in an airport where two or three young man are hurrying towards your loggage and grabbing them to transport them outside. If you don't like this, tell them politely and gently. It is more efficient if you speak in spanish. Learn this phrase before going: no necessito sus servicios por favor voy a traer mis maletas.Remember your not in your country and habits are differents. You can obtain much more by being gentle and polite than being rude. Be cool and enjoy!Never forget that the earnings of a dominican is far from what your earn home. Don't juge their way of doing things with the eye of a...

There it’s a lot to do about...

by Ronald_T

There it’s a lot to do about the risks at the Dominican Republic. When you arrive over there, be alert for pickpockets and real violence when you go outside the resort, and sorry to say that, it is necessary. But I never had any kind of problems there because I always took a guard with me from the resort who was free that evening. So, beware of your money, put it on a save place when your going outside, and watch out for the children, there have nimble fingers and your money is gone before you know it.
