Local foods include (in addition to beans and rice) yami, yucca, platinos. The main dish will not only be chicken, pork or fish, but also goat and various kinds of seafood including lobster, shrimp, crab, conch (lambi) and octopus.

For a snack you can have mangoes, pineapple, bananas, guava, chinola, and "coco frio"- fresh, chilled, still-in-the-shell coconut milk.

Favorite Dish: According to the Samana website, there are more restaurants in Las Terrenas, then any other parts of Samana peninsula for the simple reason, more independent tourist visit and stay in Las Terrenas, then any other parts of the Peninsula.

According to the second edition of The Adventure Guide to the Dominican Republic by Harry S. Pariser. (This is not the most current information), some of them are: Posada Chez Paco is a good seafood and French cuisine restaurant . French-owned La Salsa is a thatched roof beach restaurant. main road food and dining: High priced La Gateria offers deli type food and take out items. Cafeteria des Artes is an attractive French-run place offering local food and atmosphere. "El Capitan" (tel. 552-7593) is a bar and restaurant near Sánchez. Portillo road dining: Excellent places to eat breakfast are at Los Pi˜os and at (lower budget) Do˜a Nina's. El 28 is a small Spanish restaurant on the beach near the beginning of the El Portillo road; it has fish and paella. Comedor La Escala is on the road towards Portillo. "La Canne á Sucre" serves pasta, salad, and crepes at inexpensive prices (starting at US$1.75 for crepes). Casablanca is an attractive bar which has a restaurant in season. enroute to and near the beach: La Chicha serves inexpensive creole food. Rincon de Fleur is on the water. Near La Louisiane, La Orquidea serves moderately-priced French food. serves Basque food. "La Tita" is another Italian restaurant. Specializing in Basque and French food, Restaurante Jikako is off the road to the beach. Near the beach, Dinny's features a reasonably priced restaurant. Zuni's has good seafood. The French-owned Tropic Banana features gourmet cuisine. "Finchen" Restaurant serves Dominican and German food; itÍs also a very popular watering hole. Down the road, you can also dine at Kanesh and the attractive Las Cayenas Hotel. PalococoÍs Los Canarios is the classiest place on the main road.

We didn't eat at any of them, although I did take a picture of the "Rockin' Pirati" sign (photo 2)

MI CORAZON: The BEST place in town!

Traveling to Las Terrenas for a few years I discovered a new restaurant. The name is MI CORAZON. It is not at the beach and not at the fisherman's village. It's in the heart of town and I tell you, this place is just incredible. It certainly is one of the most beautiful restaurants in DR and one of the most beautiful ones I've ever seen (and I've seen many!). The food is just fantastic (they have only french and swiss chefs). The owners, two Swiss guys, are great hosts and their staff is very friendly and professional. I could even go and see the kitchen: top equipment from Europe and it's absolutely clean. This place is unbelievable. Of course the prices are not like in a pizzeria but definitively worth the money (about a third or half price of what you would pay in Europe or US for such a place and food)! MI CORAZON is a must!

I was very happy with the Buffet Restaurant at El Portillo. They had a good selection of food and there's something for everyone no matter the taste or dietary requirement (I'm allergic to fish and seafood and I hate onions haha). For breakfast they have an egg section where a cook prepares you an omelet or eggs the way you want them and you can select from several veggies and ham. For lunch they served traditional Dominican food with international dishes and the best hamburgers I've ever tasted.

This info as of 2002.

Colibar: The freshest seafood you will ever taste

The Italian chef Graziono only uses the freshest ingredients for his dishes. There is no fixed menu, it all depends on what the local fishermen bring to the restaurant. You will taste giant lobsters and if you are a fan of oysters, you can eat your heart out for a couple of dollars. A little local man will bring his daily catch to the restaurant, walking for miles with his buckets with ice and oysters. Another delicacy are the giant shrimps (camarones), always fresh and better than anything I have ever tasted.

Favorite Dish: Pasta dishes are prepared italian style, so not too heavy on the sauces, but very delicate. The fish is always very fresh, so how could you not like a lobster caught in the morning and grilled on your plate in the everning.
