    Humpback whales come every year between January and March to mate and give birth to their young. Tours to watch these amazing creatures are to be found at the big AI hotels or tour agencies and this is the only way to see them up close and personal so no DIY's are allowed. By law, all the boats must be at a certain distance from the whales so that they're not disturbed. You can combine whale watching with a trip to Cayo Levantado.

    This has been described as a small fishing village. What we saw from the bus was lots of pristine beaches. The miles of undeveloped white-sandy beaches and protected inshore waters have contributed to the growth of this formerly small village. Hispaniola was described by Christopher Columbus as "the most beautiful land in the world," and today those words could apply to the Samana Peninsula. "Time Magazine" has described the area as having one of the last, long stretches of undeveloped beach in the Caribbean.

    According to the Samana webpage, The balmy climate with it's ever-present trade winds and the warm temperature of the sub-tropical Atlantic Ocean combine to provide this part of the island with year-round, delightful weather with only a few degrees difference in temperature between winter and summer. .. Annual rainfall is moderate with no perceptible "rainy season" usually found in other tropical locations.

    ..getting a golden suntan is a snap! Follow these directions carefully: Spread your towel on your own piece of the sandy beach and apply lotion liberally. Occasionally roll over to toast your other side in the luxuriant, tropical sun. Let the inner warmth flow throughout your body and then cool off in the crystal-clear waters of the the tropical Atlantic Ocean. Repeat as necessary to achieve that Brown is Beautiful look.

    Although officially not condoned, topless sunbathing is tolerated, especially on the less-populated stretches of beach.

    Close to Las Terrenas you'll find the beach of Playa Bonita (literally "Pretty Beach"). If you don't have a car you can take a taxi or motoconcho. There are a few small hotels/restaurants/villas in the seafront (IMO it would have been the maximum luxury to stay here, better than any 5*AI.... and probably more expensive). If you continue the narrow and bumpy road for a while, you will find a beach for yourselves... Wow, that's good life!
