Las Terrenas is reached by two main roads: one from Sanchez at the western end of the peninsula and the other from the city of Samana by way of the village of El Limon and the resort at El Portillo. Both roads follow a winding route over the mountains and through the lush valleys across the peninsula and provide a scenic and sometimes spectacular view of the rich, mountainous terrain with its simple, country life.
Vehicle rental agencies may be found in Las Terrenas and Samana. Most of these offer delivery service to your hotel.
Adventure Rent Car is available at most airports in DR, and run by a very helpful lady, Gipsy Harold Ureña, Tel:809-307-7202
It should be noted that for both local and national rentals, the vehicle must be returned to the location from where it was rented..
Motorcycles, Scooters and ATV's
For the back roads of the peninsula and especially day trips to Playa del Valle and Playa Rincon, an ATV or motorcycle is recommended. On possibility is "Auceen Raid Aventure and Fun Rental" in Las Terrenas

One of the places that we passed on our excursion was the airport. If you don't come in by air or by sea, it is a long three hour drive over bad roads to get to the rest of the D.R. This little airstrip at El Portillo is just a few miles east of Las Terrenas. Aerodomca has scheduled flights daily for the 30 minutes flight from Santo Domingo and air-charter service may be booked for flights from the major airports in the Dominican Republic(Puerto Plata, Santiago or Punta Cana).

Getting to El Portillo is possible by bus but only to a certain distance. Caribe Tours and Metro will take you to Samaná and from there you must take another bus. Metro will also take you to Sánchez which is closer to the hotel. We ordered pick up at Sánchez for an additional fee and asked the driver to stop to take pictures (like the one in the overview page). On the way back to Sánchez we 3 and 4 other people shared a hotel minibus to the Metro bus pickup and split the bill.
