Samana is one of the 32 provinces of the Dominican Republic and is located in the northeast of the country, completely filling the Samana Peninsula. Its capital is the city of Santa Bárbara de Samaná , usually called just Samaná. Our guide said that when he went on to higher education, he had to travel over the mountains (the district is very mountainous) to one of the other major cities because Samana didn't have any high schools or colleges. Since it was a Sunday, we didn't see any children in the schools, and I have not been able to find out much other information on the schools here.

We did pass a police station. In some areas of the Dominican Republic there may be some corruption in the police, but I never felt unsafe there, and POLITUR is the Tourism Police force in Samana, with more than 80 agents patrolling Samana Peninsula towns, streets and beaches.
