Juan Dolio lives from tourism. And once there, all will be done so you spend as much money as possible. Basically, tours will be offered at incredibly high prices and taxi fares are totally outrageous for a third world country. Best way to travel around, go to the main road, the Las Americas highway and just wait for a little mini bus or the likes (locally called guagua) to stop. It will cost you a couple of dollars to get to Santo Domingo for example (for reference, by taxi it is 45 USD one way and a tour costs 50 USD per person ).
