This national park is a must-see for nature lovers. The lake is the biggest and also the lowest point in the Carribean. It is extremely salty too. This is the country's only habitat of crocodiles and iguanas. You can see big colonies of pink flamingoes too. In the centre of the lake there is a small island, Isla Cabritos, which is a protected area. You can reach it by small boat. It's covered with cacti and cactus trees and you can see many iguanas too, and crocodiles in the shallow waters. There are scorpios too, but the aren't dangerous. Close to the lake there is another must-see, Las Caritas, and a statue of the famous Indian casique ("chieftain") Enriquillo who gave his name to the lake and the whole area.

Altos de Chavon ~ Artisans' Showcase

Altos de Chavon is quite a unique attraction in the Dominincan Republic. Built on a beautiful plateau overlooking the Chavon River, Altos de Chavon is a jewel of art, architecture and culture. Located entirely within Casa de Campo, Altos de Chavon was constructed in 1976 as envisioned by Italian designer, Roberto Capo, to showcase and house a variety of artists & performers. The village fosters professional training and artistic expression through its artists-in-residence program with craft ateliers.

Designed to resemble a 16th century Mediterranean village, Dominican stonecutters, carpenters and iron-smiths combined their skills to fashion stone and coral into interesting shops & buildings, winding cobblestone paths and the magnificent, 5,000-seat ampitheater. You will enjoy visiting artisan's studios, galleries, shops, and restaurants here.

If you, like me, find great enjoyment in bringing home a souvenir which truly comes from the country you are visiting, the village of Altos de Chavon will certainly make your shopping easier. Artisans at the village produce handcrafts such as woven-fiber products (brightly colored tapestries), ceramics and silk-screened items (meaning t-shirts mostly), including posters and note cards. It was a shame I did not bring back even 1 postcard from this place considering how picturesque it is!!

One of the most magnificent features of the village of Altos de Chavon is its 5,000 open-air ampitheater! If you didn't know better, you really might think you were in Italy!! Several Roman columns appear higher up on the hill behind the stage and are uplighted in the evening which makes the whole area seem even more magical.

The ampitheater had an auspicious beginning with legendary performers Frank Sinatra and Carlos Santana inaugurating its stage. Since then it has featured singers and musicians of international celebrity such as Julio Iglesias, Gloria Estefan, Sergio Mendes, Dizzy Gillespie, the Dance Theater of Harlem and more.

We attended a GREAT performance of the show "Kandela" although you should check for a schedule of entertainment in advance.

The evening we attended the temperature was a little sultry, but the setting was magnificent. Upon entering the ampitheater you can have your photo taken with 2 young men dressed as centurions (our picture was good so we forked over the $10) then you are given a seating cushion because those stone seats can get a little hard on the derriere! Sodas, water and a limited selection of mixed drinks are available while you wait for the performance.

The "Kandela" Show was truly fabulous--the talent was superb, on par with some of the Las Vegas headliner shows! We booked our night there through our ship , but tickets to Kandela run around $20US which I feel is really a bargain!

One of our best and most romantic experiences. My husband's Dominican friends took us to this beach in Samana where we camped for 2 nights. We were right next to a coconut plantation and we had self-made coconut cocktails, we had the beach and lovely view to ourselves and took trips to several places on Samana. For those 3 days we only saw a couple of locals passing by (possibly plantations workers) and a homeless dog who appointed himself as a guard :) When we went out of the tent in the morning all we saw was the ocean and no tourists around.

The carnival takes place in different towns during February. In each place there are several groups competing to make the best, most extravagant and scary costumes and on the day of the carnival they parade in the streetst. Numerous merenue bands play as lound as possibl. The Diablos ('devils', that's how the masked men are called) and most of the children carry inflated animal bladders and try to hit as many people as possible with them. .. I went to La Vega carnval, they have some of the best costumes, for more pictures and information, visit my La Vega page.

We really didn't know what to expect when we booked our excursion for "Kandela." We didn't know exactly what it was, or where it was. All we knew was that it was relatively inexpensive. As it turns out, it was probably one of the highlights of our cruise. Held in the magnificent Altos de Chavon Ampitheater in a beautiful setting with great acoustics, Kandela was a show featuring superb singing talent, scores of dancers, gorgeous costumes, all in non-stop action. Each "act" featured singers, dancers, costumes, props all on the calibre of the great stage shows in the Las Vegas of old.
If I'm ever in Casa de Campo again, I would go to see this show again in a New York minute! It was that good!

Although some reasonably priced souvenirs were sold there, a color program was not among them as I remember! Too bad----it would have been a great souvenir!

Samana is a very beautiful peninsula at the northeastern tip of the country. You can still see unspoilt nature and deserted beaches, take boat trips to caves, islands and whale watching.
El Limon waterfall is one of the nicest places there, it's in the small mountain in the centre of the peninsula. You can get a mule ride from the main road or walk. The waterfall is great and you can take a swim in the small pool in front of it.

    Bacardi Island

We did a 2 or3 hour boat trip taking us for whale -watching and then for a short visit to Cayo Levantado (or Bacardi Island). It was the end of the season and the whales were going to the North, that's why after more than an hour we managed to see one and just for a few seconds. I couldn't even take a picture. The boatsman told us earlier that if we didn't see any whales we were going to get a refund. Too bad we saw just one. I had previously been whale watching in the USA and we saw several whales on each trip. However, I was in the Domiican Republic in the end of February, and for whale watching it's best to go in January or by mid-February. We also stopped at Cayo Levantado. It's a very small island you can go around in half an hour. There was a bar and some tiny beaches, also some neglected buildings. In the past this used to be a very popular spot with a small resort, then it got neglected. I hope it's in better shape now.
The views, however, were very nice. We also saw a lot of 'cayos' : tiny islands, some more like a handful of land in the see.

There was plenty to do. We took a bus into Santo Domingo for the day. It was great. We stopped at Christopher Columbus' old stomping ground and had the pleasure of exploring his castle. We stopped at a huge market that was on the side of the road., They sold everything from Cigars, rum, artwork, pottery, food, sculptures the list can go on. There was an additional cost for this, but it was nice to get out of the resort for a day.

You can scuba-dive to coral reefs, sunken ships or do night scuba-diving. We dived to a small reef and fed the colourful fish with bananas (yes, they love bananas). It was an unforgettable experience. For pictures and info, see travelogue and Cabarete page.
