Even if you never have before, try to find someone who will lend you a board. Near El Cuco there is some serious surfing but for beginers like me just take the tall, but relatively gental waves near town and try to get on your feet

I didn't have much luck, but what does it matter when you get to stand in the surf at dawn or dusk and watch the sun rise or set.

El Cuco is a four hours drive from San Salvador, more or less and the drive will take you past breathtaking views of the near perfect San Miguel Volcano, just that would make it worth the trip but . ....
