Stop in at Fernando Llort's gallery and studio; tour the peaceful and beautiful Botanical Gardens, check out the Rosario Church (modern and interesting), and go to the National Museum (and nearby crafts market).

Watching my husband and son join 80+ other people at a weekly free Salsa-cize class -- gyrating to loud music and working up a good sweat!

  • Beach during the rainy season! - San Salvador
    Beach during the rainy season!
    by Ken_Weaver
So when is the best time to visit? The rainy season is May to October, rates on hotels are generally lower, its cooler at night, the beaches are less crowded but you get heavy rain for an hour or so everyday in the afternoon or evening. During the dry season, of course, no rain but it very hot especially at night and dusty.

Last time I was in El Salvador, 2002, was in July and we left the city to go south to the beach ...Costa del Sol(see travelogue on El Salvador page) The beautiful hotel was literally empty as was the beach yet the weather was wonderful...about 85F unless it was raining which it did every evening!

The big holidays in San Salvador are Christmas which actually begins with the celebration of the Virgen de Guadeloupe on December 12..Celebration runs on into the middle of January. Hotel rates usually escalate about 50% during that time. Easter week is a big celebration too. The first week in August is celebrate around the day of August 6, patron saint day, El Salvador del Mundo, for the whole country. In San Salvador there are fiestas and a big parade.

My El Salvador page has a description of activities and places of interest in San Salvador. The National Museum of Anthropology and Archeolgy is a good starting point. This museum set in a modern and spacious building showcases the history, tradition, religion and culture of El Salvador, from it's early days to the present.

San Salvador is at an altitude of 800-1000 mts above sea level, providing a warm summerlike temperature all year long. I have a special preference for the rainy season (may-october) when everything turns green and the vegetation is very lush. The tropical afternoon downpours are very refreshing, and make way for clear and fresh nights. Tropical rains are an experience in their own right and I find this time of the year the most attractive.

San Salvador is the second largest metropolitan city in Central America....population of about 2 million. It was founded in 1525 by Pedro de Alvarado and has been the capital since 1839.

  • Try the pop called Kola Champange. It is local to El Salvador and tastes kind of like orange pop mixed with creme soda. I know it sounds a little wierd, but it tastes really good.

Everyone was very nice to me during my entire trip.

  • Bring US dollars. Starting January 1, 2001 US dollars is the official currency.

The weather is so nice. Try to visit El Salvador when they are not having their rainy season. El Salvador's temperate climate means that beaches can be visited all year around. The Pacific Coast beckons tourists with 200 miles of black and white sand beaches, interesting wave breaks, and an abundance of seafood.

  • I loved this country! It's weather is beautiful, and because of its small size, you can easily enjoy the ocean and the mountains in one afternoon. Unfortunately, I was there during the war, so I missed out on a lot. But I keep hoping to one day return. I'm still amazed that some American mogul hasn't moved in and turned it into a tourist trap.
