Favorite thing: Santa Ana is El Salvador's second largest city located in the western part of the country. The old part of the city around the central square is beautiful and very well preserved. The central square or "parque" is flanked on each side by the outstanding neo-gothic cathedral, the theatre, and the city hall, all extraordinary buildings of different styles or periods. The city of Santa Ana offers a good alternative to staying in San Salvador and offers all basic services. It's also a good base if you want to visit other parts of the country, such as the colonial town of Metapan, the Montecristo National Park (*****), the Tazumal ruins, or Coatepeque lake.
