Santa Ana's Cathedral is El Salvador's largest neo-gothic building. It's elaborate facade contrasts a lot with the clean and simple interior.

A beautiful colonial building. Generally not open to the public but you can ask to visit the central courtyard.

    Teatro de Santa Ana
Another great building at the Parque Central of Santa Ana is the theatre. This construction was opened in 1910 and is a sign of the love for culture of the city. The building was first used as a theatre where opera's and other plays were performed. In the 40's however it was transformed into a moviehouse, to make this new medium available for a large amount of people.

Later, its function changed again into a real theatre. It is said that it is one of the best theatres in Central America. The inside -that I only saw on some pictures- is fantastic. A very beautiful "Gran Sala" in which the plays are performed and a beautiful "Cupula", the central dome, that is decorated wonderfully.

The exterior looks very colonial and has a typical, green colour. The decoration are made by Italian artists.

Coatepeque Lake is considered one of the most beautiful crater lakes in Central America. On its shore there are hotels, restaurants and tourist establishments for practising acquatic sports. In the lake there is also a small island which was a Mayan site of some importance.

Coatepeque Lake can be reached from Santa Ana by an about 75 minutes bus ride, a little less by taxi. If you are not planning to go the lake shore but you are planning to visit the Parque Nacional Los Volcanes you can still enjoy nice panoramic views of the Lake from one of the lookout points on your way to the Parque. The photo attached is taken from one of these points.

    Ruinas de Tazumal, San Andres
Santa Ana is a great base for visits to nearby Mayan Pipil ruins in Tazumal/Ahuachapan, San Andres, Joya de Ceren. Also close to the Volcan de Santa Ana, Cerro Verde Ntl. Park, and Volcan de Izalco, made famous in the book about the 1932 revolt and massacre of Indian laborers: Cenizas de Izalco.

    Theatre
The theatre was built in the late 1800's as a result of a booming economy due to coffee production around the city. Italian and french architects were hired hence a classic italian theatre in the middle of salvadoran coffee country! It's being restored, but open for visitors and during performances.

When I entered the lovely patio of the town hall I almost fainted. Just in the middle of it there's a fountain įnd a real 'Manneke pis', just like in Brussels (in my home country). And that while people looked to us like they had never seen foreigners. They asked us all the time where we came from and how many hours it was with the bus and there was even a man trying to sell us a bed! Amazing
