A great meal!

On Saturdays and Sundays there is a food festival in Juayúa where you can find a lot of traditional food to eat. Around Parque Central tables and food stalls are set up in the morning and before the evening they are taken away again. Most of the places show their meals on plates, so you know what to expect when you order. There are different kind of meat, sausages, beans, rice, potato, vegetables, fish, shrimps and much more. If you walk around you will probably find many plates you want to try. Both plates I ate were 5 dollars (June 2009).

Making juice

I found two places in Juayúa were I bought fresh fruit juices (there are probably others as well). Both were just west of Parque Libertad, one on 2a Calle Ote and the other on 4a Calle Ote. At both places a fruit juice with papaya and orange was 1.50 dollars (June 2009) and both times I forgot to say I didn’t want to have ice in the juice. I don’t like when they mix it to small pieces with the fruits and it also becomes too cold. At one place I got it in a cup to take away and at the other in a plastic bag with a straw (that’s very common in Central America).

Making riguas

I ate riguas for the first time at the food festival in Juayúa and they were delicious. Riguas are sweet corn pancakes with the shape of a half moon. They are grilled in a banana leaf and in the end they are grilled without the leaf to make a crisp outside. I got a plate with three riguas and a piece of salty cheese on the side. It was 1.25 dollars (June 2009).

Ice cream at Sarita

Ice cream

Sarita is a chain of ice-cream places which can be found in many El Salvadorian towns and also in Guatemala, Honduras and Costa Rica. The company has its origin in Guatemala 1948. In Juayúa there is one Sarita’s in the north-eastern corner of Parque Central. I came back here a couple of times and tasted a few different flavours and it was yummy! A cup (or a cone) with two flavours was 1.20 dollars (June 2009). It is quite small inside but if it is not raining you can sit at a tables outside, watching people go by.

Hamburger at R&R

I had read good reviews of R&R on Internet and when I passed the restaurant one early afternoon it was full of lunch guests. I came back in the evening and was the only customer (until three more people arrived).
The menu is extensive and I ordered hamburger with potatoes. The hamburger tasted good, but when the meal arrived they had put ketchup all over the potatoes. I don’t like ketchup very much and asked for new potatoes, which I got. The hamburger was 4 dollars and a beer was 1 dollar (June 2009).
It was very dark in the restaurant and some more light would have been good.

Pizzeria Al Forno: Great New Pizzeria

This restaurant provides excellent family dinning at a great price in clean fresh surroundings. Nestled in a block from the main square and cathedral discerning visitors will appreciate the clean environment and courteous service offered by Pizzeria Al Forno in Juayua. It is truly service with a smile at this one of Juayua's newer establishments and service in English is available most afternoons and evenings. The food is excellent and a variety of delicious pizzas and side dishes are available. My personal favourites are the vegetarian pizza, the nuditos or garlic roklls and the Lasagna. If you are looking for a place to eat that is clean, serves high quality food at a reasonable price and gives you a comfortable respite from the marketplace, this is the place to visit. They even have a website in both Spanish and English

Favorite Dish: I have several favourites: the vegetarian pizza with broccoli and tomatoes, the chicken and beef lasagna with either nuditos(garlic knots with sauce) or cheese melted garlic bread.
