sugarbirds

There are birds in St Martin called Bananaquits or locally sugarbirds, because if you put out a dish or small plate of sugar out on your deck or patio they will come by to feast---gorgeous golden birds similar to our goldfinches but bigger....also sometimes if you put out a small bowl of water they will bathe in it, if it has not rained in a bit....

Lolo's

All over the island you will see roadside street food, Lolo's. Don't worry, it is perfectly safe and delicious. Really, it's hard to get a bad meal on either side, but lolo's offer a true sense of local food. From ribs to stews to saltfish and johnny cakes. Give it a try and enjoy.

Buses vs. Taxis

What a bus or taxi might look like

THEY LOOK THE SAME! The only difference will be the bus (really a van) has a little sign on it reading bus and its licence plate will say bus. However, if you're not savvy, you don't necessarily look for these things, or are looking for a proper city bus-ish vehicle. One might come round 10 times and you've missed it, only to become frustrated and take a taxi for 5 times the price.

Also, you just tell the driver where you want to get off and he'll stop in the middle of the road for you.

The Friendly Island

Yes people are friendly here, but don't dare give someone a hard time. Attitude.

I was looking at a child's dress but told the vendor it was too big. I wanted a size for a newborn. She said she had it and proceeded to look through a large bag of stuff. She found it and when i then refused to purchase it she cussed me out for making her work so hard!

I asked a lady vendor at the Marigot market to take her photo. She cussed me out for not buying anything and expecting her to pose for me!

My taxi driver was not allowed to enter the gated community where i was staying. He cussed the attendant out!

I was shocked at first, but then got use to it. Only happened three times this trip, so I guess it was not that bad, but now I look back at it and smile.

French shopkeepers like you to greet them....

Americans tend to walk into a shop and immediately start prowling around. The best thing you can do in a French shop is first greet the shop proprietor/ess with a "hello" or even a "Bonjour". It is considered very rude not to do so in French culture. Just say hello!
